Aloysius Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 My son just Emailed me recommending this rather than IE Any opinions folks? DrP?
Santa1503559644 Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 In some respects its better. (Its not Microsoft! ) In others its a dawg. I've ****ed in this subforum about some of its "features" from time to time.

Santa1503559644 Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Thanx for the feedback - I might just leave as is! Well, I am still using it though. A little less prone to hijacking* than anything from Microsoft. ____________________________________________________ *And doesn't embed itself right into the core of the O/S, either! ** **Yeah, yeah... you know what I mean!
johndee Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I use it when I am downloading, otherwise I use Opera. Never use I.E - 2many faults (Or more) JB
Mcrackn Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Firefox user here, been putting it on quite a few clients PC's at work too, seems to fix a lot of weird problems that IE has
digitalj Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 (edited) I use Firefox so I can block ads Edited October 12, 2008 by digitalj
BribieG Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Takes forever to load, and strangely the load period varies. Usually (on my 2yo middle of the range machine) it takes about 30 seconds, i.e. about the speed you could get IE up on your old 486. However sometimes it takes over a minute but can be prodded into action by launching a second session, which seems to bump the first session up the arse, and it loads the 2 sessions more quickly, so you close one of them. Mozilla defend this by saying that IE preloads most of its stuff at the same time XP is loading. Trouble is that if I am really pushed for time and need to get on quickly to internet banking to shunt some money so I can use my card to get some petrol like in 10 minutes or I miss the train, I tend to be a traitor and go back to IE for that task.
Aloysius Posted March 8, 2007 Author Posted March 8, 2007 OK - thanx for all that I will give it a try after all
DrP Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I use FF exclusively at home and in general don't have any problems with it. Some stupidly written sites will only work with IE, in FF bits are missing or the pages render incorrectly. This is usually due to IE completely ignoring the rules and rendering anything. Take for example this... Feed IE a .jpg file where the mime type is set to indicate .jpg file is an image file. Make the contents of the file actually be a script. IE will ignore the mime type, ignore the file extension and execute the script. FF on the other hand will attempt to render the image, fail and display a broken image placeholder. FF isn't without its quirks and bugs, but in general the bugs are fixed 1000 times faster than they are with IE. IE6 still has some major security issues that haven't been fixed for years and never will be fixed now that IE7 is here . This must thrill W2k and earlier uses that will never be able to run IE7 - not that IE7 is incompatible with these earlier versions, MS wrote the installer to refuse to install! People have ripped the installer off the IE7 bundle and it runs quite nicely on W2k. Takes forever to load, and strangely the load period varies. Usually (on my 2yo middle of the range machine) it takes about 30 seconds, i.e. about the speed you could get IE up on your old 486. The reason for this apparent performance difference is that IE is mostly preloaded by explorer.exe and is effectively always resident in memory. On top of that when you launch FF it does an integrity check on its local cache, IE doesn't and just hopes for the best.
Guest EZYHD Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Been using Firefox for about a year, find it faster than anything else, but then again I have a Mac so no virus problems, its faster than Apple Safari IMO.
aztec Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Trouble is that if I am really pushed for time and need to get on quickly to internet banking to shunt some money so I can use my card to get some petrol like in 10 minutes or I miss the train, I tend to be a traitor and go back to IE for that task. I would never use IE for internet banking or financial stuff, I just don't trust that I ain't being watched. I used to use Netscape for everything but now use FF, except for Windows Updates or other stuff where Microsoft force you to use their browser.
Autocrat Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 If you've got a Harmony remote, you can download a firefox extension that makes the logitech online software much more useful. That and tabs, which I couldn't be without. Yes, IE7 has them, but MS are bastards.
Aloysius Posted March 9, 2007 Author Posted March 9, 2007 It's on - and I'm using it now - and so far - so good
mello yello Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Thanx for the feedback - I might just leave as is! Five posts later... OK - thanx for all that I will give it a try after all I can see how you were shanghaied into the Liberal Party If only we could rehabilitate you away from those crooks as easy
Santa1503559644 Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 BTW: One of my biggest gripes with the 'fox, is when you have more than one window, you lose functionality like "Home" and "End" keys. Dunno why, but it annoys the proverbials outa me! Also, it seems to have a pathetic number of instances where "CTRL-C" and "CTRL-V" fail to work, etc.

lemonato Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I used to use Netscape for everything but now use FF, except for Windows Updates or other stuff where Microsoft force you to use their browser. Try using this. It basically allows you to find windows updates while still using FF. But you might want to research it a little first as i haven't tried it. As with the M$ site you still need a valid copy of XP

Dunno why, but it annoys the proverbials outa me! Try Tools, Options, General, in the browsing section untick Use autoscrolling. That cut and paste issue is a PITA and they know what causes it. It was allegedly going to be fixed in ver 2 and never fixed in 1.x. Needless to say it still happens in ver 2

DrP Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 What Ctrl-C / Ctrl-V bug ???? There is a well known bug in FF that when certain forums that use a certain unnamed forum program are viewed with FF, the CTRL+V/C combinations do not work. Its a bit random but is well documented and the FF team know the cause and solution. It can happen with other pages, but that certain unnamed forum is the most prominent cause. Doing a mouse right click and copy on the selected thing in FF works. The bug causes me no end of grief cutting and pasting addresses to/from the addressbar amongst other things.
