Got my Toppy 5000 last night and then proceeded to delve into the back of the entertainment unit to start hooking it all up.

Cut a short story long.......hooked up the TV via s-video - no worries. Then thought I'd use the supplied scart to component cord provided to hook up the dvd player. Plugged the scart into the VCR plug on the back of the toppy and then the component into the DVD player. Sound is wired through the amp so left that alone. Fiddled with the settings on the Toppy so that the VCR scart option was set to YUV and the VCR SCART type to External A/V. Pressed the 'satellite' button and hey bingo - black screen!

Proceeded to then try it through s-video (unhooked to TV and made it just composite and same deal.

So - am I doing something wrong....am I missing something?

Any help appreciated - thanks.

Why the VCR SCART? This is only composite output no matter what your output setting. The only one that will follow the settings is the TV-SCART. (VCR-SCART for recording composite with a VCR no matter what setting you choose).

Edit: Oops, read the message Tony. Your "VCR scart option was set to YUV" threw me, as the setting is for the TV SCART, not the VCR SCART.

The passthrough does not do a standards conversion. If you want to use component from the DVD player through the passthrough, you have to also use component from the TV-SCART to your TV.

OK - so let me just make sure I've got this right......If I hook the DVD up to component with the SCART cable and plug it into the TV-SCART and NOT the VCR SCART, and set it to YUV - this will work?

Cheers

No, I thought you were trying to hookup to your TV via component. The only "input" on the Topfield is the VCR-SCART, but this is used only as a passthrough to share a connection to your TV. It doesn't do standards conversion. So if you want both your DVD player and Toppy to share a single component connection to your TV, then you would need two of those cables.

NOTE: Audio is directional in scart, that cable is designed as an output cable only, so no analogue audio would passthrough from the DVD player using two of those cables. However you use optical to your amp, so this won't bother you anyway.

If you want to share a single svideo connection to your TV, then you will need a SCART svideo adapter. These are about $10 with in/out switches on them (svideo, audio and composite are all directional in scart), from Aldi's, Jaycar, Retravision Dickies etc.

Thanks Tony. Once again - to clarify we're on the same page (sorry.....it's not that your info. isn't clear....this is just new ground for me!). I leave my TV hooked up via the s-video to s-video as I currently have it working (component is not an option - s-video or composite only). I then go and buy a SCART s-video adapter and hook it into my Toppy (via the TV SCART?)?

The vcr-scart only passes through to the tv-scart. As far as I know you can't use the separate s-video socket to pass through the dvd's video.

So you want:

- DVD player connected to toppy's vcr-scart via 's-video>scart' adaptor

- TV connected to toppy's tv-scart via 'scart>s-video' adaptor

Make sure your cables/adaptors have the direction changing switch (input/output) or are designed for the direction you need.
