mello yello Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 From the Sportsdesk..... Look away if you dont want to know the score Love him or hate him Anthony Mundine is a naturally gifted boxer and a supreme athlete. Mundine defeats Soliman on knock-outAnthony Mundine won his second WBA super middleweight title with a ninth-round stoppage of fellow Australian Sam Soliman in Sydney on Wednesday night. Mundine, 31, a former rugby league star, put Soliman down once in the second and twice in the ninth round before South African referee Stanley Christodoulou intervened at 2:26 in the ninth round for the vacant title. Mundine dominated Soliman with superior speed and power and erased any doubts raised by his contentious split points decision win over the same fighter in 2001. Soliman showed great conditioning and courage to survive beyond the second round as he was stopped for the first time in his ten-year professional career. Soliman was competitive before Mundine took control with a big right hand in the final minute of the second round. A staggered Soliman was pushed to the canvas and then slipped to the floor in the third as Mundine went in for the kill. Soliman appeared to be working his way back into the title bout in the fifth, but Mundine regained control near the end of that round. Soliman was wobbled late in the sixth as Mundine stuck his tongue out and taunted his battered opponent. It was Mundine's 28th win (22 by knockout) in 31 bouts. Mundine previously held the same WBA title in 2003 and 2004 before losing it to Puerto Rican Manny Siaca. -AFP ....oh.....and he played for St George
Guest EZYHD Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 He sure is a great sportsman, but I've never ever met anyone that likes this loud mouth.
Cooksta59 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 He sure is a great sportsman, but I've never ever met anyone that likes this loud mouth. He is at the peak of his powers currently but time marches on and pugilists usually end up recieving back what they have been giving out.He can obviously box but if he could just shut that mouth
Gutty Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Gifted Tosser !! Credit where it's due though, i'm sure he's worked hard to get where he is. Even if both his titles were vacant...
Gino Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Watched this fight on the bigscreen last night.. it was terrific. I actually quite like Mundine... he's good entertainment. I think the mouth is all part of the game. Ali did it, why not Mundine? It's just another tool against his opponents and part of his persona, makes it fun to watch. Now if he talked like that and didn't come with the goods then that is a different story. But last night, he was in control the whole way.. I was suprised Sam even lasted to the ninth.
Guest EZYHD Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Would be better if he kept one of his gloves right in his mouth, maybe both!
CoNFooZeD Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I don't mind it when Mundine tells us he is the greatest when he actually wins a fight as he has just done. What put so many people offside was when he was bragging how good he was when at that time he wasn't. Aussies tend not to like brashness or immodesty. Mundine seems to have styled himself on Muhammad Ali who talked plenty of trash but had the wit as well as the boxing ability to pull it off.
Thudd1503560234 Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Muhammad Ali who talked plenty of trash but had the wit as well as the boxing ability to pull it off. There's a critical difference. Ali could pull off the "I am the greatest" routine. Mundine just sounds like a suburban wannabe toughguy when he does it.
Gino Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Who's to argue with him though, he's a showman... he's worth $20 million... good on him
mello yello Posted March 8, 2007 Author Posted March 8, 2007 Hes always been a bum on seats hype builder. He admits he tries to get ticket sales up. I gotta laugh though ..when he was still playing League for St George ...the next game after Melbourne beat them in the Grand Final in that infamous Harrigan penalty try incident...he goes and fires of at the mouth and says how the Dragons were going to revenge the GF loss and stuff like "well see who should have really won the game" bla bla bla ........Melbourne dished out one of the biggest floggings of all time.....74 nil or something like that
FMB Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 umm...it's boxing. Two brainless morons punching the living daylights out of each other while a drunken crowd cheers them on. Seriously folks.
