BribieG
I travel mid day and I always sit in the front car of the six car set because it's not too crowded as most people follow a bell curve and sit in the middle cars. Also the front car is amusing because that's where most of the fare evaders sit. When they come into a station where the ticket inspectors are boarding, they get first view of them and dive out of the doors. The inspectors are becoming wise to this, hide behind buildings then enter via the third car then rush down to the front car and nab the poor dolies and single mums. "now I've got you you sons of ****es" $150 fine in Bris. but they do get one warning. OK I should get a life.
Timmy Downawell
In hindsight I should have offered "I sit in the front/last car" and "I avoid the front/last car (in case of crashes)" options. Oh, and "I sit in whatever car is least crammed"

I used to sit where I felt like, because where I got on and off was usually pretty close to the end of the line for up and down journeys... ando9185
Not many options for train travel in Tassie, we're lucky to just have the freight trains. But when I go to the mainland I go for any car, but I do like the first car because it gets there first.

Nevyn72
I was waiting for that Yeah, well I had to get home from work didn't I! Bloody passenger trains blocking us all the way in from Moss Vale! Why? It's not as if you can steer or anything Steer! It's hard enough starting and stopping the bloody things! (4000 Tonnes with steel on steel traction, thank God for the sanders....) You get to play with the horn!Surely that's something worth getting on board to get off over? Still call them a Whistle actually, even though they are 'Bastard Grade' Air horns! We are not allowed to use them in at Central Station anymore when working the Indian Pacific, somebody broke a window.......

tonygib
I tend to sit in the carriage that I know will generally be less crowded. I always ride in the direction of travel (motion sickness) and I also pick the side that won't be filled by the sun (just gets too hot and sunburn on the train isn't on my list of things to get). If its an older "engine" carriage, then I avoid those since they tend to be noiser and smellier and have less seating space so more crowded. I also don't sit at the very front or back of the first or end carriage, since yes, the first place you die in the event of a crash, either from the front or rear-ended. But just remember, I'm not a compulsive!!!

Steve C
OK... It's time for me to be serious. When travelling on trains, I've always tended to travel on the carriage that is going to provide the most convenient access to the entry/exit from the platform. I always looked forward to travelling by train from Como into the City as a kid, and I still enjoy travelling by train... even if it isn't as frequently that I do so these days. Despite our Blue Mountains line having a number of derailments and fatalities, I figure anyone who is going to be that paranoid about where they sit being knowingly 'safe' in the case of such an accident, should seriously consider counselling. I know some people who won't travel on Mountain trains without being very close to the guard's compartment, for fear of being accosted/assaulted/murdered by some of the youths that use the inter-urban service as an alternative avenue to places they can 'have some fun at' when they don't have immediate access to a car or they couldn't be bothered stealing a vehicle. They also know they can get on and drink booze without anyone challenging them or their legal right to do so. I've had a number of run-ins with kids on mountain trains being abusive to Asians or anyone they figured they could abuse as looking different enough. It saddens me that so many commuters prefer to just try and hurry past the abuse to find somewhere they can hide from the trauma of it. While taking a stand against such un-Australian behaviour isn't something I find particularly enjoyable or edifying, I do believe it's a responsibility for those who can step in, to do just that. It just gets a little wearisome to have to do so almost every time one travels by rail from or to the Blue Mountains, which is why I now prefer to travel by car. Give an inch to those who'd love us to give them a mile, and you can lose a rail system...
digitalj
It depends what I'm doing. If I'm going to chatswood from Epping, I end up at the back of the train between Epping and Hornsby, then at the front of the train from Hornsby to chatswood. Or if I'm going from Chatswood to Epping via Hornsby, I'm at the front until I get to Hornsby, then I'm at the back until I get to Epping/Beecroft Or if I'm going Chatswood to Epping via City, I'm at the back/middle the whole way. Dork(original)
I don't travel on the train these days.Back in the days of the old red rattler if we were traveling with the old man he would ask the guard or driver if we could ride with them.We were rapt let me tell you I imagine it wouldn't happen these days .Dork Edited May 15, 2007 by dork
Guest JohnA
i like to sit up front in the drivers seat, don't think passangers would like it if i just jumped int he carriage and sat there whilst the train was moving "who's driving the rain?" " it's ok, it's on auto pilot" or unless its coming from broadmeadows then most likely there is no driver in it at all

I wonder how they are going to like it when they commission that new 35 board at Adamstown on the Down?
