Apologies if this is seen as a silly topic for a new thread, but I have been asked by a few people how AVP: Alien vs Predator compares to the SD version.

well, first up, here are some screen caps.

I set up the PS3 and my Oppo (so keep in mind the SD is upscaled to 1080i), went to the same scenes and took photos using an 8 mega-pixel digital camera. They were taken seconds apart under the same conditions, the only difference being the source and obviously ambient light off that source.

When I watched the opening sequence of the extended version, the Antarctica 1908? scene, on blu-ray, I must admit to thinking to myself "this is pretty disappointing, I don't think the BD is any better than the DVD". Needless to say I kept watching for a while during which time I started to notice the finer detail and other blu-ray specific improvements. I then started some A/B tests which really showed the difference between the two versions.

As you can see in the pictures, the BD version is alot shaper, more detailed and colours are more consistent. The BD picture is a big improvement over all.

Audio. Unfortunately the Blu-ray soundtrack is a DTS HD Master. Why unfortunately? well, not many players can decode this so few people can get the benefit. The PS3 converted this to a 1.5mps DTS stream. It still sounds fantastic and an improvement on the DTS track of the DVD version, but knowing there is more, and that a PCM track would have worked just as well is disappointing (hopefully the promised PS3 DTS upgrade will boost this to a higher bitrate). That said the track is still excellent.

My verdict, if you enjoyed this film, it is worth getting (especially at present with 50% off at amazon). While it is great demo material, there are better discs for that purpose, so I would say this one is strictly for fans.

This is not supposed to be an in-depth review, but merely a link to the pics and some basic comments. Feel free to post any specific questions.

By the way, just to refresh peoples memories, the DTS 1.5Mbps stream is the core of the DTS-HD MA audio stream. All players can decode this part of it. It is the extra data on top of the lossy data to make the audio lossless that currently, I believe, is unable to be decoded by any player. So in essence, the player did not "convert" this to anything... just played a small part of the total bitstream.

DTS on DVD's is either 1.5Mbps or 768kbps for multichannel audio (including DTS-CD's)

Also

DTS-HD is Max 6Mbps on Blu-ray and Max 3Mbps on HD DVD.

DTS-HD MA is Max 24.5Mbps on Blu-ray and Max 18.0Mbps on HD DVD.

whats true hd?

Dolby TrueHD is 18Mbps on both Blu-ray and HD DVD...

All that is required for Meridian Lossless Packing to offer 8 channels of audio (inc 1 LFE channel).

Also known as PPCM (Packed Pulse-Code Modulation)

6 channels of PCM would require approx 13Mbps for 24bit @ 96kHz...

Shows that there is plenty of space available in that 18Mbps!

It also can include metadata like DTS and DD does for normalization etc (probably the reason for the 3dB difference to regular PCM as on Blu-ray... hopefully a firmware update will be released to "disable" this metadata, so people can not **** about PCM being better then PPCM)

There's some serious color differences between the shots. DVD is green, Blu-ray is eh.. Blue

The only significant thing this uncovers is that your camera suck balls man!

I know I'm a noob to the forum and all that, and I am fully aware of your senior membership... but seriously...

In all honesty - no offence intended here. Your comments are really interesting and appreciated - just wish I was a richer man so I could send you a new camera

Just noticed the best bit... If I feel so inclined - I can BUY PRINTS TOO!!!

OK shutting up...

Momaw...what projector are you using?

It's only a 42" plasma. Nothing special. 1080p Projector at the end of the year *fingers crossed*.

Might explain why poo doesn't like my camera.

cheers momaw

so which players out there at the moment can decode DTS-HD / DTS-HD MA? (beyond the "core")

LOL. I mean WTF? Too man TLA's? We're talking about playing the BRD version of AVP on a PS3 and comparing it with DVD. It'a about as straight forward as understanding the difference between DTS and PCM. :D
