quijibo
I had most things already, but after buying a projector and considering that the expensive part I had to buy a screen, a ceiling mount, ceiling mounts for the screen, speaker cable, banana plugs, coax cable, component cables, hdmi cables, HD STB, logitech remote, network cable, network switch, equipment rack and new rear speakers. All up I have now nearly spent as much on the extras as I did on the projector. I am probably not alone here and I have probably done it a lot cheaper than a lot of people, but I am still shocked, and so will my wife be when she sees our bank statement this month, although she sort of knows I've spent a lot with the amount of packages being delivered to our door. Hehe, wait till you/she wants new curtains for the HT. More than the current pj again... but in the end well worth it for PQ
quijibo
The curtains will be replaced, not only are they old and ugly but they are also thin and let in far too much light. The wife also wants to replace the carpet with polished wooden floors. I think I talked into keeping it carpeted, but she still wants new carpet. The walls are all brick bar one and the echo after clapping your hands is quite pronounced so I need to fix that, but as a temporary measure I will be hanging a couple of rugs on the walls until I pay for a better solution. She also wants recliner chairs down there so there is still quite a bit of money to be spent on the room.
djOS
Expensive is the word, the ex-wife would never have let me spend $30k on a HT so I've been building mine up while looking for Mrs djOS #2.
kiwimeat
I'm a Project Manager so I actually had a budget and submitted it for approval prior to onset of the Project. I came in on -4% for the electronics but we went +13% over on construction and finishing. Overall we went +4% over total project budget including contingency. Of course this didn't include the procurement of a new Denon 2930 DVD player which came after the project was completed. Costs for accessories and other minor items certainly can add up. Yeah, I don't really want to think about that, but my mortgage is about $30k more than it could have been because we bought this house with the extra rumpus room. Now that really makes my efforts to save a few hundred dollars on a projector look bloody pathetic.

The Denon 2930 DVD is obviously an Operational expense and not a Project expense, either that or you should put it down as a scope change and have a revised budget - theres always a way of justifying over runs

CustomHT
you've also gotta add that you never really ever finish a home theater completely, as its always a work in progress as you always wanna add new things or decide it's time to upgrade.. jdh500
I've kind of gone the other way, ie. where currently finishing a home extension which includes a 7m x 4m HT room, I've actually purchased all the cables (installed during construction, extra ducts etc), motorized screen, projector mount etc in readyness for a projector. Even had to allow another $600 to the builder to install a projector screen bulkhead to hide the screen when when retracted in a 2.7m ceiling, extra powerpoints, paint darker feature wall etc. I guess it's past the point of no return, will probably purchase one of the mid priced LCD projectors like the Panasonic in 2 to 3 months time, ideally if I can wait another 6 to 12 months (unlikely) I might pick up a cheaper next generation 1080p projector. I will however save on the Plasma/LCD TV as I probably won't go as large in that area as it will only be used for general TV like news etc and the projector for movies only. JDH.
