Harry1503559513 Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 There is such an appalling choice of FTA TV on Friday and Saturday night, I am thinking of abandoning all together if it wasn't for ABC and SBS. If I really wanted to watch ancient movies then I would rent or buy the DVDs and at least watch add free. How about some dramas or even sitcoms. Movie showing is just a cheap cop out IMHO. I assume that this is same in all states, let me know if not, I am in Perth.

However, using a PVR means by the end of the week I've collected a few shows from earlier in the week and I can watch those on Friday or Saturday Night - assuming I feel like sitting on the couch. A PVR really does make a huge difference to your viewing habits although you are still screwed by the networks that cancel shows mid-season without warning.
LBM Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 What is this "free to air" you speak of? I do recall hearing something about it around five years ago but my memories of it are fading quickly.
BribieG Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Agree with you about Weekend TV. The worst aspect is that on Saturday Mornings after a hard week out there reaping the benefits of full employment in Johnny's workers paradise, legions of workers turn on the Tv and unless they want to watch cartoons or pop clips aimed at 13 year old girls, forget it! Even ABC2 shows cartoons!! WTF....!!! Sunday's not too bad with stuff like Planet Earth and some of the arty farty stuff on ABC & SBS which can be quite a good alternative to sport. Weekdays there are some gems during the day (I work evenings so often fluke a good daytime program) like Big Cat Diaries and Pilot Guides, and a PVR would be good for these.

Foggy Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 just do a google on "mvgroup" and take control.

A PVR isn't the ultimate solution when a studio changes the scheduling unexpectedly (particularly programs on after sports events): even setting an extra 30 minutes before or after you can miss parts or all of a program.
Perth Antennas Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 There is such an appalling choice of FTA TV on Friday and Saturday night, I am thinking of abandoning all together if it wasn't for ABC and SBS. I assume that this is same in all states, let me know if not, I am in Perth. I shouldn't say this because I am an antenna installer, but Foxtel is great. I find there is always something good to watch. Plenty of documentaries and news channels. You also get footy on Fox Sports. Terrestrial viewing is getting worse every day. I only watch about 4 hrs a week. I say this without prejudice, I have no affiliation with Foxtel.

You are quite correct. Funerals and memorial services can also kill the schedule (I was on holiday when Packer died and missed a show because of the televised service). For shows that are on after sports events (or "unscheduled" live events like Big Brother and the rest of that type of crap) for that type of case my SO has been known to pad an extra 2 hours around the show if the harddrive space is available as she can easily top and tail it the next day. At some point, though, you have to almost accept that you'll miss the odd show. It was only a couple of years ago after all you (i.e. average person) could only record one channel on the VCR if you were going out for the night now many people here quite happily record two channels (and download a third ). It's amazing how quickly our expectations rise to meet the current technology. A PVR doesn't solve the whole problem of shows suddenly disappearing either. But they do at least let you record a bunch of stuff from during the week to watch at your leisure at a time that suits you and not the broadcaster which, I think, does deal 80% with the frustrations the OP was venting.
sulimo Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I shouldn't say this because I am an antenna installer, but Foxtel is great. I'd beg to differ. I find it quite unwatchable. At least since I moved from my little 51cm analog set to a 32" LCD set. I don't know why I keep paying for the damn thing. As for FTA...I just use to checkout a few thins that I've previously seen months or years ago in HD. As well as news, current affairs and the occasional doco (and cricket when its actually on).

Neon Kitten Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I shouldn't say this because I am an antenna installer, but Foxtel is great. I find there is always something good to watch. Ergh, no thanks. I spent nearly 3 years being ripped off by Foxtel before cancelling - and I was a customer from the start when they didn't make you pay to watch ADVERTISING! For me, there's always something good to watch on Channel BT. Illegal? Who cares? Arrest me, dare you "The networks made me do it, officer!"
troykm Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 i agree that there is little on the weekends, and i only hope that foxtel takes all sport from the commercial networks (braces for impact!!) then they can use the money from the rights to those events on buying some decent programming for a change, let those who want to watch sport pay for it i say! or.... let the networks have 1 multichannel, that way they can have their sport and show other programming at the same time, that way ensuring ALL viewers had something to watch. the latter will never happen though as its a good idea, and in australia, for some unknown reason, good ideas get mashed up, squashed, set to commities, then sub commities and return a mere former shadow of what was a good idea. (excuse scarcasim)
