Hi Guys,

I have spent the past weekend playing with my HT, hence all the posts lately. One of the little projects i am doing is running my foxtel from one room to the other via cablinf in the roof.

I am using one of these at each end for video -->http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=QC3429&CATID=&keywords=rgb&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=

and am making my own RCA audio leads up, ive got all the gear from jaycar, but to ensure im doing it right , does anyone know a DIY website with hints, tips and pictures? Am i correct in there is an outer wire, and an inner that need to be connected to the plug?

Any assistance appreciated

Cheers

The inner core of the wire is the signal carrying part and is connected the centre of the RCA plug. This will need to be soldered to get a good connection.

The outer cable, is actually the sheilding which is soldered to the casing of the plug.

When making the connection, do the inner core bit first and try not to use too much heat. Also, only strip a small part of the inner core, so that there is plastic between the inner core connection, and the outer sheild of the plug. This will make more sense if you have a RCA plug in front of you

Also, if you have a multimeter of some sort, check the resistance between the core and outer of the RCA plug when your finished. This should be "OL" or overload, as it should be an infinite resistance (no touching). If you get a reading of any sort, the sheilding is touching the signal path, which is bad.

Thanks Whacko, makes sense...i figured the inner had to be connected to the very tip. I think i will need to get some good wire strippers. And you say to solder the inner, and just crimp the outer.

Trying to get it all set up before the fight night WED.

thanks heaps

I always solder both, the quality of the ground is just as important as the quality of the signal

yeah, i solder both too.

I just use a very sharp stanley knife to strip them, but there are strippers specially made for RG6 type co-ax cable. My cable had a solid inner core made of steel i think, not the good stuff.

Depending on what cable you have, the shielding will probably be braid which you will need to twist together, and then solder to the outer part of the plug. One of my cables I was playing with, had foil which I couldn't solder, but also came with a thin wire that was wrapped up with the foil which i could solder.
