I picked up a pair of the Whatmough Magnum M30s & Whatmough Magnum M5 centre to go with a Pioneer VSX-AX4AVi Receiver I purchased. See:

http://www.whatmough.com.au/magnum.htm

Well the speakers are actually called Soundlabs Magnum M30s & Soundlabs Magnum M5 centre. See:

http://www.whatmough.com.au/audiolabs.htm

The local store was selling all their Whatmough speakers and I was hoping to pickup a pair of Opus 30s but they sold before I got to the store.

Anyway for the price they are excellent speaker. I paid $960 for the Magnum M30s plus the Magnum M5 centre.

The Magnum M5 centre has a RRP of $399.00 and the Whatmough Magnum M30s a RRP of $999.00. Well that is what is listed on this site:

http://www.audiotech.net.au/WHATMOUGHHomespeakers.asp

I didn't really buy the M30s expecting them to be that great of a speaker but I was very surprised.

In 7 years of HT mate I have only used Whatmough's and I used to have the Magnums so I'm not surprised you are surprised at all mate

Current Speakers: Whatmough

C32 Front

Opus II Centre

FX Rear

Tempest II Sub

Neill,

Well given the price and considering what you get for the same money with other speakers I'm still surprised. Here is a US review which also confirms my thoughts.

Thanks for your thoughts, and I appreciate what you're saying.

Yep another happy Whatmough owner here too, I have listend to the Magnum's and liked the sound aswell and for the price you could do a hell of a lot worse.

Hay Yorac how do you find the FX's? As that is my next purchase if I can still get a hold of a set, Then that will be it for speakers for me for a while Opus all round should sound a treat.

Hi bizzibee,

Just read your post. In mid-Feb I bought the same speakers thru Hardley Normals... got the M30s for $599 and the M5 for $250... just for once, it seems like I actually got myself a bargain ! (I'm usually very unlucky with such things... been stung or missed out faaar too many times.. :\ )

I can't use my M5 centre speaker yet as I don't have a receiver (researching that now.. http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=48787 ), but I've enjoyed the M30's (room reflections and standing waves be damned!). Using a NAD 3240PE 2ch amp, I didn't have such problems with my old Richter Merlin monitors, I'm guessing becos they didn't have the low-end capabilities that the Magnums do ? (the Merlins are about to become my "surround" speakers.) Things can only get better after I make some bass traps, etc, I expect...

No plans to buy a sub.... yet....

(Incidentally, I was told I was able to get them discounted because Whatmough is no longer going to be making the Audiolabs/Magnum range.)

Hi guys,

Brought the Magnum speaker package about 3-4 years ago from HiTek in Northcote and have enjoyed them with my family tremendously in that time. I must admit that I always regarded them as good budget speakers because they were the cheapest Whatmoughs at the time. Boy have I been wrong. These are fantastic speakers for their price. I have only compared these to a basic Wharfedale package that a friend has and an Accusound Reference 8.3 package I just brought off Ebay. They are significantly better then the cheap Wharfedales (I've seen them at JB HiFi for $600) and slightly beetter then the Accusounds I've just brought. The lower bass from the Magnums is just so tight and smooth, whereas they were a bit sloppy in the Accusounds in comparison. Also female singing is more "delicate" in the Magnums- although I couldn't pick any difference in the male singing (closet Michael Buble fan). However, I've only had the Accusounds for a day and it does mention that the speakers need to be broken into for 30 hrs. I'll also be upgrading to a Pioneer VSX1016 (currently VSX-D710) in the next week and seeing if changing to HDMI and/or bi-amping makes a noticeable improvement to sound quality in both the Magnums or Accusounds.

I just had my second demo today of Whatmough's. I am heavily leaning towards the P series - P32 mains, P7 Centre and the PFX rears, coupled with the new Implulse Sub.

I am really, really impressed by these speakers, and the only other ones I like are the Krix Neuphonics, but I think on price, the Whatmough's will win.

The P32's are at EOL, and because of this, the price is very appealing.

I also have a mate who, after exhaustive research a few years ago, ended up with the full compliment from the "Classic" range.

Great speakers all round, and it's nice to hear such shining recommendations.

Cheers,

Chris

TassieDevil,

You got a good price on those Whatmough speakers!!! I'm glad you have had some luck.... finally.

Regarding your Receiver search. Can I suggest you look at picking up a used unit from perhaps ebay. There is always someone who has updated to a newer model and you certainly can pickup a bargain if you know what your looking for.

Speaking of which, Yorac had a Marantz SR-7400 for sale at $800.00. Here is some info

http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/marantz_7400.htm

... Finally the SR-7400 can compete with other brands technically whilst still offering one of the best "musical" sounds around for 2 channel listening. At $2399 it falls slap bang in the middle of the mid priced premium receiver market. It's available in Black or Silver and is a heavy (16.5 kg) handsome beast.....

Here is a review of the Marantz SR-7400.

By the way, I'm not connected with Yorac, except I did buy his Pioneer DV-S969AVi DVD/SACD/DVD-Audio player.

Not very keen about eBay, unfortunately. I've been bitten once... and swore I'd never buy anything of substance there again.

And no, I don't really know what I'm doing... hence my post with a lot of questions (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=48787). I'd like to think I'm not waiting in vain for more responses/suggestions/answers...

Thanks for the links/info...

(Sorry for going OT)

Unfortunately I can't really make any detailed comments about the sound of my Whatmoughs because my small loungeroom really is horrible at the moment for standing waves and reflections...

TassieDevil,

If you not keen on ebay, (and I can understand that). Send Yorac a Private message here and ask him about his Marantz SR-7400. See:

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?act=Msg...4&MID=17925

I think you are much better off in terms of sound quality buying a used unit like Yorac's Marantz SR-7400 for $800 than a new $500 receiver. Remember the Marantz SR-7400 sold for $2399 new.

Anyway here are some details on his unit. Taken from his profile.

Link and review with specs below, mine is gold in colour, in exc. condition, manual and remote, see my sig for price or reasonable offers accepted, will deliver Melbourne S.E. Suburbs
