You can probably grab the Toshiba 55" Plasma that has the rotating bezal base, i.e you can turn the TV 30 degrees left and right with remote. Its a pretty damn fine looking TV and I have seen them sub $7k as they a superceeded model now apparently and the price is dropping...I do no think they have inbuilt tuner tho as the guy at Hervey Norman Oxley up here in Brisbane was offering me the unti with a HDSTB thrown in all for $6500.

If you can find one I think your dad will be impressed when you see some HD on it, has a very nice panel in it (i think its a panel made in the fujisui plant) Just had a quick look on their websit and they dont seem to have them listed anymore so if you find one in will be old stock and you will most probably get a greta price on one as they will trying to move it

Check out the Hitachi 55" which you could get for under $5,000, only has analogue tuner built in but with your budget you could buy a twin tuner high definition PVR and bank the change

How do you know they are discontinued ? I realise this 55" panel only has an analog tuner - but JB are still selling them and they still appear on the Hitachi Australia website ?

Talking to a dealer they told me the 55" would be discontinued later this year (2007) in favour of a 60" model with HD tuner.

How does the picture on the 55" (PD8800TA) compare with the newer 50" (PD9800TA) which is 1280 x 1080 ALiS?

Some points I have been pondering:

55" 1366 x 768 vs 50" 1280 x 1080 ALiS, what is the real effect of this as far as getting a good picture quality with no artefacts, jaggered edges, etc? Does one perform better than the other? In the shop they both look really good. In fact the 55" colours, skin tones, etc looked great, more natural. The 50" may not have been setup properly as looked a bit grainy when watching a DVD. Initially I thought the newer unit would naturally have to perform better, now not so sure.

Viewing distance for me is 2.6 to 3m, will 55" be too big? Will I be able to see artefacts, pixelation, etc on it that won't be able to see on the 50". I want an immersive experience for movies must have a crisp picture with no annoying glitches.

55" is $1500 more expensive than the 50", is it just the size you are paying for or is there something "better" about the PQ of this screen"?

Comes down to which is most likely to have the better PQ at your viewing distance for the sources that are going to be viewed which for me are mostly DVDs and Austar and a bit of FTA analogue for football matches not on Austar (no digital terrestrial here yet) plus Xbox 360 and maybe a PS3 later but the games are only used a few times a week. All of this will run to the screen through a Deonon AVR4306 which does a pretty good job of converting and scaling to the point that it even makes the substandard Austar picture look reasonably good on my smallish LCD.

Bascially, will the 50" 1280 x 1080 perform better at 2.6-3.0m with the above sources than the 55" 1366 x 768?

Except for the few 1080p sources a large part of HD you'll be watching is 1080i, so I would query this:

does the ALiS unit transmit 1080i fields (half-frames) to each half of the ALiS screen; or does it de-interlace 1080i to 1080p first then transmit full-frames & the ALiS nature of the screen turns it into interlaced again?

It's double jeopardy with the latter as you ultimately get an interlaced picture yet still are subject to the inherent shortfalls of deinterlacing.

There are definitely some very happy owners of the 55" and I was leaning that way based on some of the info in that thread but I think most of the discussion was prior to the release of the current 50" model. As the 50" is less than $3000 I am interesting in knowing how it compares to the 55" especially as 50" might be ample for my 2.6 to 3m distance.

IMO it's not worth paying $1,500 extra for the 55", especially when there's no gain in resolution -- it's much like placing a simple 1.1x magnifying glass panel in front of a 50".

Surprisingly, noone has bothered mentioning the 55" Sony 3LCD RPTV, it can be had for ~2K. Good option if you don't have to have a flat panel.

You obviously have never owned a big screen display.

It’s amazing what you can see in a big image that goes unnoticed in a smaller screen, the viewing experience is very deferent and much more enjoyable and involving on a BIG screen.

I would much rather view 576i SD TV or even Foxtel on my 70” or 57” displays then on my 34” display.

Try getting someone who is used to a BIG screen to give it up and go back to a smaller display.

Image size is VERY important to the viewing experience.

Seconded.

Overall I don't disagree with this.

But do you still maintain "the viewing experience is very deferent and much more enjoyable" with an incremental increase from 50" to 55" (which was what the poster was asking).

I’ll take a 55” over a 50” any day of the week, the extra screen area is considerable.

A 50” is not a big screen at 3 meters.

If you can afford it, take the bigger screen, all else being equal.

I have looked quite a lot between the Hitachi 55 and new 50. I have a similar viewing distance of about 3 metres and the 55 would be just too big at that distance. The new 50 inch also has a HD tuner all for about 3990 and does have 1080P compatibility so you are part way future proofed without having to spend big bucks on 1920 x 1080..

The resolution is clearer with the 50 inch, as the 55 is a little soft.

My money with your listening ditance of 2.6 to 3 would be the Hitachi 50 and you would be laughing.

I am still waiting for my wife to sign off on the Hitachi 50 inch.
