franin Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Samsung releases a hd-dvd laptop http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/03/02/sa..._laptop_launch/ Looks like this war seems to me will go on for a long while yet.
djOS Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 That is a seriously sweet laptop! So far I haven't heard of any BluRay Laptop Drives even being announced so it's hardly surprising that Samsung have opted for HD DVD in their Laptop Range.

That's strange. My first view of Blu-Ray was seeing "House of Flying Daggers" on a Sony Vaio laptop about 9 months ago in a local store. They've been available at least that long.

My theory is microsoft being the most influential in the pc market can push hd-dvd in computers very easily.Thats why having microsoft as a hd-dvd backer can be benefeciary to the format. But then again it's just a theory. That's strange. My first view of Blu-Ray was seeing "House of Flying Daggers" on a Sony Vaio laptop about 9 months ago in a local store. They've been available at least that long. Well sony will be never been seen with a hd-dvd player.

Scalpel Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Samsung releases a hd-dvd laptophttp://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/03/02/sa..._laptop_launch/ Looks like this war seems to me will go on for a long while yet. Toshiba has had the q30 HD DVD laptop for a while(link) Asus has had the W2P HDDVD Laptop for a while (link) with built in HD tv tuner. Sony has the Vaio BR Laptops - VGNAR series for a while (link) The samsung is not really anything new. J. Just wish you could have a combo drive

Just wish you could have a combo drive The whole point of what I posted was that samsung has now a hd-dvd player.I wasn't posting it to say it was the first one, it was more for to point out that samsung being a blu-ray player supporter has now released a hd-dvd on there laptop.

My understanding is that the height of the Bluray drives (and cost) is the significant turnoff issues for using them as laptop drives. Be interesting to see the pattern of uptake as it develops. Anyone buying the Sony must be seriously loaded with cash - it is near double the equivalent HDDVD laptops. I was looking at the cost of the add-on HDDVD drive for the Toshiba Q30 (you can buy it without the drive) thinking that it would be a good way of acquiring a 'cheap' HDDVD drive. It was then that i found that it cost $1200. Even with the tax deduction, it is still a very expesive way of watching HDDVD! Be great to see if LG could offer a minaturised dual-ray format drive. J. (I was not criticising your original post - just pointing out the competition and noting that samsung has not really advanced the state of play - well except for defecting from BR)

Do you think that microsoft can be a big influence over these companies?

Without a doubt, MS offered major software credits(2005 or there about) to the likes of HP and others to jump ship. PS3/BR being a percieved major threat to MS. Ironic really HP released a PC BR unit a month or so back. At the end of the day each company will look after it's own bottom line...........irrespective of MS's insecurities.

Supposed to only $1299.00 US See here: Sony VLP - AW15 yeah very happy with it, the Z5 is a sizable step-up in PQ and highly tunable unlike the HS50 which was a bit limited unless you wanted to play in the cryptic service menus.
