cbennie Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 I'm sure it's been asked before but can 'the good folk' out there recommend how I should hook up my Toppy 5000. My poor 12 Year old CRT NEC 68cm will eventually be replaced by something thinner and bigger but for now it will have to soldier on with Codral. So - from memory (It's a major pain to access the back of the telly), I have 1 s-video connection and then the standard Video Out and Video in. Currently the DVD player hosts the s-video connection. So, umm.....what now? Ta muchly Chris
boric Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 So, you have 2 options, s-video or composite right? Is there a noticeable difference between the two on your TV? If so, then either swap them as you need to, or plug the most commonly used device into the s-video, or plug the device that you think makes best use of s-video into the s-video. Easy. My 14yr old Sony only has composite in so luckily I don't have no make such a difficult decision!
Dave® Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Chris, use the toppy's vcr-scart to pass through the dvd player's s-video signal. Connect the TV-Scart output from the toppy to the TV's S-Video input (use a 'scart > s-video+audio' adaptor). Then use an 's-video+audio > scart' adaptor on the toppy's VCR-Scart, connected to the DVD's output. Set the DVD to output s-video. Set the toppy to output s-video. Set the toppy's VCR-Scart to Standard. Then when you want to watch DVDs press the Sat/TV button on the toppy's remote and the toppy will pass through the dvd's si-video signal (and audio).

Actually Dave, you would use "External-AV" rather than "Standard" for anything that doesn't signal pin8, i.e. something hanging off an adapter rather than using a fully wired scart-scart connection. And make sure for the VCR-SCART INPUT adapter, you use an adapter with one of those "in/out" switches on it set to "IN" (as scart is directional, and for audio, composite and svideo, these have and in or an out direction). Of course you can use the same type of adapter on the TV-SCART output to go to the TV, but set to "OUT". Regards
deadmanemailing Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 I've used the rca/composite, s-video and now component (via scart). Just use rca while using your TV. But go for component when you get a new TV.

Is this the kind of plug I should be hunting for? http://www.marketworks.com/StoreFrontProfi...&i=34118456 Thanks for the help - as always! Chris
tonymy01 Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 That works for an output, but NOT a VCR-SCART input. Just get one of those plug adapters with the in/out switches on it, $9 from Jaycar, and similar cheap price from Aldi's. Dick Smiths sells it, but it is a rip off from there. Regards
Dave® Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 That works for an output, but NOT a VCR-SCART input. Actually that one does have a switch. You can just see it in the 1st picture (at the back of the hood). And the description mentions "Features an in/out switch which allows the lead to act as either an input or output (playback or record) lead."

So I need 2 of these? Sorry about the step-by-step questions - but now that I've bought this beast.....I'm severely back to newbie status on the bell curve. Toppy should arrive tomorow and I will sit down and study all and sundry. Chris
deadmanemailing Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 I have not read this thread properly to know what exact cord people are refering to, but I'd wait and see what comes in the box. Mine came with a scart to component plug when I bought it last year. (And I can't be bothered looking at the back to see if the scart had other connections.)
Dave® Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Yes - this plug does have the in/out switch.So I need 2 of these? Yep
tonymy01 Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Oops, it was late! I just saw the webpage this morning as I was closing a few open tabs and went "oops, screwed up". I skimmed the page before and saw "this cable is suitable for scart devices to connect to a TV" or something like that... But you don't need to search around for some kind of boutique cable, the in/out switch adapter is readily available in nearly any hifi or electronics place (even Aldi, it is something like $10 with a bunch of cables also!), and then you just plug ordinary svideo or composite cables into the adapter.
