They never said they were going to do it in HD what did you expect, chanel 7's definition of HD is a joke anyway.

At least its widescreen so hardly "7 drags tv back to the 80's".Maybe turn of your STB and go and watch it in analogue on a 68cm tv,then you'll remember how tv used to look.

Ch10 is showing a 1970's show of Monty Python in 1080i

My hovercraft is full of eels

Its funny that on my SD STB, Channel 10's Monty Python has a better PQ than the Channel 7 V8 Supercars footage.

Shameful really.

I'm not a great sports watcher but whenever I do it seems to be a 'given' that the PQ will be crappy, is this just to do with 'legacy' outside broadcast cameras that have to broadcast over not-the-best links back to the studio?

Maybe new equipment would solve the problem. For example I notice that the outside broadcasts for Totally Wild - when visiting a zoo or whatever - are superb in HD.

Also, 7 at 576p is internationally classed as "Enhanced Definition". Not that it's enhanced very much. Watched Silence of the Lambs last night and did a lot of toggling between 70 and 71 (SD) and finally settled for the SD as it looked crisper.

To call 576p 'HD' because the Australian Govt says it's so, is a bit like North Korea claiming "no child suffers from hunger in this workers' paradise - oh by the way the Govt here classes high nutrition as half a cup of rice a day".

not sure what your all worked up about to be honest - 576p over 576i, who cares? i cant tell the difference on my display.

the real issue is 7's use of 576p as "HD" and the Govt allowing them to get away with it, but thats hardly a new one...although i agree with your sentiments in this regard.

I'm not even watching the 'HD' channel.

Just good old SD.

And the PQ is nowhere near as good as it used to be on Ten.

But at least they are showing the support categories.

And they've already let on f-bomb through without bleeping

They really should have a finger on the button if they are going to broadcast radio chatter

That is because it is switched off during the telecast. Overall I am fine with what Seven are doing, besides the changed watermark you wouldn't notice any difference. Did you really expect it to be HD? It never has been and I don't think it was even talked about.

The whole show as in PAL. NOT 576...!!!...PAL...I have a Toshiba HD STB and I deliberately put it on AUTO and when ch70 finally finished its 2 millionth showing of it's HD loop, my STB blacked out and changed to PAL, the box had gone from ch70 to ch7 ????....now ch70 is missing from my favourites list and when I hit the info key while on ch70 it shows as an SD broadcast???...This is bullsh!t, ch10 broadcast in 1080 as I still have a few races on my PVR from last season, while waiting for the many many ads to finish I skimmed through a few races from ch10 last year and the PQ is miles ahead of this farce ch7 are broadcasting.

And at 5.27pm at the end of the sham broadcast my STB blacked out again and bugger me if the real ch70 HD came back to life, just in time to show the POS Sydney Weekender which is in HD?????

ch7 suck big hairy dog balls on this, what a joke!! I bet they'll show every gAyFL game in all it's HD Glory!!

The picture quality when the V8's were on Ten was always pretty dodgy - from what I've seen today, what 7 is providing is no worse. Chan 10 certainly did NOT provide it in HD.. it was only an upconvert on their HD channel.

Be interesting to see which OB vans they have out there for the V8's now Ten isn't involved.. always used to be Global TV.

you oblivously have no idea on channel seven workings do you.. first of all.. seven is not producing the v8 supercars broadcast.. they are transmitting it... it is produced by v8 supercars tv.. second of all... sydney weekender is not in 576p HD it is an upconverted.. thirdly.. PAL is 576i.. and lastly seven has only just shown the first race of a new series after being out of the arena for over 10 years.. not a bad effort so far for the first race.. give them some slack.. you remind me of someone on here who hates seven perth

WTF? 'sydney weekender is not in 576p HD it is an upconverted..'Then why does my HD STB Toshiba tell me it IS in HD when they switched back at 5.27???...Why does the 'info' page show it as an SD broadcast during the V8's and then the box switches back to HD 576 when finished? You obviously have no idea??? And as far as 'first time effort goes' it was chock full of ads over and over and over the same run of ads, it was a joke. If 7 aren't producing it why spend $15 million on it??? You have no idea.

It's a bloody lot better than the half arsed 576i efforts on Seven and lets not even begin to discuss LCN70.

Squared eyes just because a show is on the HD channel does not make it a HD show, even if your stb says its 576p or 1080i

Firstly, your STB will say it is 576p even if it is 576i upconverted to 576p - as my Toshiba HD STB also does...

Secondly, you should actually thank channel seven rather than completely bag them, as the overall PQ was probably actually better during the supercars broadcast as they completely shut off their HD stream and put all their bitrate behind the SD stream just as they did with the Tennis.

IMO, if they'd shown it in HD, you'd more than likely have a worse picture as the bitrate would have been far less than they provided.

ten used to runs a chock full of ads to promoting the sponsors of the supercars series

supercheap, kfc, and major companies pay a lot of money for the ad space during the telecast and buy quite a few 30 seconds blocks knowing that the v8 draw a lot of viewers that why it is the same companies ad over and over... seven is not pay tv and actually have to show ads to make money.. oh wait on pay tv you pay for ads anyways  but seroiusly.. your stb updates the fact that the lcn70 changed from a sd broadcast simulcast to the hd and your box automatically updated it so you can watch it... my suggestion is if you can get prime.. watch lcn 60 and watch how they do the same thing.. its not rocket science its just pure ignorance

and it wasnt 15 million they paid it was 65 million

They still use the old PAL cameras recording 576i signal. Channel 9 and 10 usually process everything at 1080i.

To understand this, it's really just like a Pioneer DVD490v or Panasonic DMR-EX75 DVD player/recorder using HDMI and UPSCALING everything to HD. The DVD (in this case V8 footage) is filmed in 576i and processed/transmitted at 720p (ABC) or 1080i (9, 10).

Channel 7 do fantastic job with HD by deinterlacing the 576i signal to 576p HD. </sarc>

The situation is pathetic.

As a side, speaking to a proud Panasonic employee the other day. ABC was shopping around with Sony, Canon and Panasonic with the aim to replace all their AV gear starting next year. They considered all formats of cameras and have decided on Panasonic.

WOW who cares? The format they have chosen is SD (Secure Digital) flash cards. The new broadcast cameras will use 4 SD card slots. When a 32gb card fills up the card is removed and transmitted back to HQ while the 2nd, 3rd, 4th cards keep recording. Then the 1st card is inserted again, giving infinite recording capabilities.

I presume MPEG2 recording is used.

I used the consumer version of this 1080i camera (come bundled with a 4gb card for $2k) and another that uses DVDs (8cm) and has a card slot (no card included-same price me thinks) and they seem fantastic. Only saw signal on 1024x768p tv, but looked better than Sony offering I've used.

No moving parts in the recording, great in most tempertures, and presumerably very reliable. I may finally say goodbye to Mini DV.

Does anyone (preferably with normal eyes) have any memory of channel Ten broadcasting the v8s in actual HD last year?

I certainly don't think they did.

The PQ was never great.

Maybe some of that froth and foam from your mouth floated up to obscure those square eyes?:D:P:P

I remember last year and as I said in the other thread, I really didn't see any difference. Sevens PQ looked fine to me, certainly no worse than last year but I can't say it looked better though.

But I'm a poor SD bumpkin with an old CRT so what would I know?

I think you need to learn a little more about digital broadcasting before you start shooting off your mouth squared eyes.. Your making yourself look like an uninformed idiot.

1. Because you have your Toshy box set to "AUTO" the box is stating what is being sent out eg: HD. But just because the box says it is HD doesn't make it so. 10's HD channel runs at 1080i at all times, but not all programs are in true HD, SD programs are up-converted from their native SD format to a HD stream, but the quality is average, kind of like polishing a turd. So your box is just misinforming you about the actual program definition, it's only telling you what it is being fed.

2. 7 didn't pay 15 or 70 million, all up they paid close to 120million for the rights. Seven do not do the actual broadcast work, they just retrasmit what they are provided by AVESCO, much like the F1 and channel 10.

Get some sleep, those square eyes must be causing you trouble.
