Santa1503559644 Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Starting with the v8s, and Seven's coverage of the Clipsal 500. I see they've got Crompton from Ten, but Denyer has dropped in my estimation from "funny bloke" to "all-round annoying goose". Dunno about Gibbo et al, but lets just hope they don't have the old-style Nine racing commentary of Mr Huuuuuuuge and Co! Given that the Ten PQ was always pretty poor, its interesting to see what Seven's will be like.

I too await the comparison with interest - but, I gotta say that given my Ch10 reception was far worse (I can only get 10 via SC10 now!) than my Ch7 reception; any improvement will be worthy for a follower of motor sport from the days of Morris Minors, Vauxhall Victors and Zephyrs amongst others.
djOS Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 I found the PQ of their "V8 Extra" show last week to be excellent but then it wasn't a live broadcast.
Steve C Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 I found the PQ of their "V8 Extra" show last week to be excellent but then it wasn't a live broadcast. That's likely due to the higher cost SD cameras with excellent quality lenses which can provide good quality SD video for 'upscaling' to 576p... but a whole battery of cameras of that expense around every circuit would cost a bomb. You'd think that a few lower cost Sony Z1 HDV camcorders connected via HD-SDI rather than component directly to their broadcast control centre would provide a 1080i 50 signal that would downconvert to 576p pretty damned fine. I sometimes get the feeling that much of the poor picture quality we sometimes associate with our HD programming is down to an inability of many longer term broadcast technicians to accept that excellent quality HD video cameras can be got for a relative song these days. They're just stuck in the groove of what they know.
AndrewW Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 10 minutes until we find out if my beloved sport is better than ever, or gone to the dogs. Unfortunately, I'm not really holding my breath ... I wonder how much irrelevant crap they will shoehorn into the 5 hours coverage each day. And I wonder how much coverage (my bet is none) they will give to the support categories ? Andrew.
AndrewW Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 well that's not a great start. yesterday www.tvguide.com.au was saying the coverage was from midday to 5pm. I just switched on to get the toppy ready to record, and treasure hunters is still going, and according to the episode guide, the coverage runs from 12:30 to 5pm. Jumped back on tvguide.com and it says the coverage goes from 1pm to 5pm I wish they would make up their minds Andrew.
dvduser Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Use eBraodcast - they are pretty well always 99.9% right, according to them (and it's been on their web for the last week) coverage for both days is 1.00PM-5.30PM 1.00 pm: SEVEN'S V8 SUPERCARS 2007: V8 SUPERCARS ROUND 1: CLIPSAL 500 D1 to 5.30 pm

djOS Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 ICE Guide has been saying a 1pm start all Week and TED/S has programmed my Toppy appropriately.
AndrewW Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 ICE Guide has been saying a 1pm start all Week and TED/S has programmed my Toppy appropriately. well that's a pity, because it started at 12:30 (Brisbane time that is) ... Andrew.
djOS Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 well that's a pity, because it started at 12:30 (Brisbane time that is) ...Andrew. Aaaah, I forgot about the lack of DST adherence in Brissy!
djOS Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Well chaps, I for one was quite happy with Ch7's SD PQ for the V8 SuperCars - I watched it on my 42" plasma and saw no obvious bitrate starvation artifacts unlike the rubbish 10 gave us for most of last year. Also Matty White + Cromley made a very good commentary team and Denure also did a good job imo - it's so nice not to have to put up with Stiffy anymore.

I thought it was okay as well. On my SD gear I couldn't see that it was any different to tens last year. Highlight of the race was early on when the scroll bar along the bottom claimed Murphy was runing 7th and 9th! I'm sure he'd take the points! It was like that for several loops of the scroll bar - at first I thought I was seeing things. I would like to see 7 make use of their extra channels though - if they claim they want multichanneling they should prove it when they have the opportunity. The V8s would suit some form of data (map positions, leaderboard) or cockpit views etc on the other channels.
AndrewW Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 the uncensored f-bomb on the radio traffic was the highlight of the broadcast for me ...
djOS Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 the uncensored f-bomb on the radio traffic was the highlight of the broadcast for me ... Yeah that was Ingall telling his engineer he was "a bit F@#N busy right now"!

freighttrain Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 i like that they was no mention of it after it happen at least with ten.. they used to say sorry about the vivid language just used.. we audio whatever comes out of the car
ibanez5 Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 i like that they was no mention of it after it happen at least with ten.. they used to say sorry about the vivid language just used.. we audio whatever comes out of the car It's live audio, not much that they can do about it. There was talk of having the V8's on a 30 second delay or something when it was still on 10 after they had complaints about it.
eleventyseven Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 When I wasn't watching ads, the racing was great!!! I think I've worked out why 7's been out bidding 9 & 10 lately... they're selling 10% more ads!!! I might be wrong but I'm sure last years coverage had more of the cars and less of the stupid KFC ads. Anyone else like to comment?
Champion_R Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 bit rates been upped to 8mbps So it'll look like about 4.5 for the other broadcasters instead of 4 ?
Santa1503559644 Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 Just waiting for the Champ to weigh in! Seriously though, Thought the PQ was pretty reasonable. A bit better, but not much so. The pit cams were still composite. Ingall line was good. Didn't much like the score-panel, with all those ridiculous "1 T Kelly ; 5 Q Winterbottom ; 9 R Kelly ; 25 J Citizen" etc! ...and that ridiculous xbox popup thingy was so incredibly lame I was embarrased for Seven, myself!
AndrewW Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 actually I didn't think much of the lap counter either. It took me a while to work out exactly what it was trying to tell me. And I noticed that the 'reporters wearing ill-fitting driving suits in the pits' made a return, I was really hoping that had died out. Considering how bad I thought it was going to be, I was overall fairly impressed. Big up for covering the support categories. Andrew.

Was OK for the longer events, but looked silly in the first (the utes) when it read as "Lap 1 8"
jsa Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 I'd like to voice my disgust at them failing to transmit clipsal on the Brisbane HD channel today. Getting home from work to watch my recording I find 4&1/2 hours of the same auto replay drivel they run on that channel nearly continuously. 7 should give there HD channel to someone who will actually put it to good use. Regards John
