halhax Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Hey guys Am close to buying a new 5.1/AVR system and just wanted to run it by some of the people here who may have had experience with the following items. My room is a carpeted 5 x 4 with a little bit of ambient light. I bought the Infocus Screenplay 5000 though and will project this onto a 100" motorised screen (fixed screen is not an option as I have a wall mounted plasma). HT will be mainly used for movies: AVR: Yamaha 2700 Mains: Krix Neuphonix Rears: Krix Equinox Centre: Krix Epicentrix Sub: Krix Seismix 3 First things first, I know the speakers are probably too big for my current room, but I am planning to move to a bigger room in 12 months. For the moment, I figure that too much is better than not enough. My only concern is the sub. I like to have room-shaking and wall-trembling bass and I am worried that this sub will not be quite enough. I have flirted with the option of buying an additional Krix Seismix 3 sub or upgrading to the Krix Seismix 5. I have considered other subs (e.g. Richter Thor/REL) but want to have the one manufacturer for everything. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Hal
wheelz Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 I would go the thor or Rel over the krix sub,Its more important to keep the front 3 speakers matching than the others ,so i wouldnt be to concerned if not all speakers were from the same maker. Im sure the set up you have suggest would sound great, just test a few subs.Even better buy MarkH's thor that he is sell on the forum.
Hydrology Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Even better buy MarkH's thor that he is sell on the forum. Nice recommendation wheelz!! Hi Hal, Yes I am selling my as new Thor IV. If you are in Perth and interested, PM me an offer and Ill certainly consider it.
glennb Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 What is the Seismix worth? Whats the price range for Sub options? The rest of the system will sound great, and it's always best to have too much sound, than not enough.
Azz123 Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 halhax you mention getting two subs.. May I ask your budget for your sub(s)?? Not to take away from Marks offer, though if it could extend to a Velodyne DD-12, or even better to a DD-15, you'd not only get the benefit of plaster cracking performance, you also have the ability to EQ your current (and future) room for optimum bass output to your crossover point. Believe me, it makes a HUGE difference!! Food for thought..... Aaron

When I bought my Richter Thor it was down to those two. If music on this system was important, I think the Krix would win by a whisker, but as I only wanted a sub for movies, the Thor IMO was the better unit. You can obvioulsy get better subs, but be prepared to spend more.
Azz123 Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 The Yamaha has Para EQ down to 31.5Hz, and very accurate. Damn good point!!! As I understand it, most LFE is in the 30Hz range so that would certainly keep things tame.. I think my 2500 doesn't do much below 100Hz by memory.. Don't you hate options??
halhax Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 Thanks for the replies everyone! Have decided to go with the Krix Seismix for now, with a promise from my wife to upgrade it if need be. Cheers
Inego1503560167 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 My seismix 3 has been great in a 4.5x3.5 room - problem is I'm moving into an 8x5 room this weekend, with large openings to kitchen and dining room totalling almost the same. Planning to use lounges to block off a 4x5 listening area. Will see how things such as the sub cope - already stretching the marriage with new AVR and Screen (arrives Friday!!!)..... Kent

Kent I spoke with Peter at Krix in Adelaide and ran this by him also. He suggested that the Seismix 5 would be a better option than 2 Seismix 3s, but the chap in Sound Advice in Perth said the opposite! Thanks for the info and good luck with yer upgrade!
Cobba Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 (edited) Sorry to come in a bit late, but I was searching through because I want to add a sub to my system and thought my comments may be of interest. About 6 years back I bought the Centrix, Euphonix and KDX-M as part of my first proper home theatre setup, but couldn't stretch to a sub. It's taken me so long to get one because the bass from the Euphonix is plenty for most movies and can almost be too much with music sometimes (where the vent plugs come in handy). The fact is, with a lot of movies when I've had others there, they've been looking for or commented on how good is the sub, even though there isn't one! There's quite a bit of variance in soundtracks though and some movies are lacking a bit of punch, so I'm now after a sub to fill that void. How have you found the Seismix 3 Halhax? attilathepun Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 This seems appropriate here: I have a shiny new Yamaha v661b. I currently have Welling speakers (Elegance 4f) front, centre and surrounds I am looking around for some speakers and will be auditioning some Krix Lyrix Gold this weekend. I am hoping to purchase two fronts now, then a centre soon afterwards (matching brand) then some surrounds down the track. My question for the resident gurus is (assuming I am happy with the sound of the Krix in store) will my amp be happy driving them? The 661 is listed as 90W and I understand the Krix are 4 ohm speakers. A few others on here appear to be running a Yamaha/Krix set up, but they all have higher spec amps. I am also going to audition some Jamo 630's. Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated. Thanks
dantan Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Buy a Velodyne sub woofer, and you will be happy for many years. As much as I love my Krix loud speakers, for a sub woofer, you really have to buy Velodyne. I have a Krix Epicentrix centre channel loud speaker and a pair of Krix Lyrix Gold's (I shall be replacing these with a pair of Krix Neuphonix). The system that you are assembling sounds really good, although, for your surround receiver, have you considered Denon, Onkyo, Integra, or, even, dare I say it, Sony?
PJS2 Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Right guys I have had to re register from not being here since the Forum moved from the other site. A bit of advice, I need a new AV Amp, my Marantz SR6200 has just dropped its main channels, its not the amp section as the pre-outs don't work either and its intermittment with some crackling going on. I would say a dry solder somewhere in the system. But its time to move on anyways and junk the amp to the kids room. I have Krix Esoterix 2 (they are not the 1 MkII there 95litres cabinets look like the lyrix on roids) as mains running off a Carver M4.0T PA 375 wrms per channel into 8ohms, a Centrix, a pair of Euphonix for the rears and a Velodyne SPL12 for the bottom end. I am not after anything too exotic and my set doesn't have HDMI in fact nothing I own has it YET. Thinking of PS3, and Beyondwiz down the track and maybe turf the Sony 60' for a SRXD Model. But I want to improve the surround stage. I have been waiting until the next gen Amps with full media/PC functionalbility but alas the Marantz is toast kind of. I was thinking the Yamaha 2700 my only question is what is it like via component out? I have has a DSP1, DSP300E, DSP1000 in the early days and my main gripe then was bottom end, they lacked grunt. How are the newer Yammy's in this regard. My 6200 was always a stop gap as I was more intent on 2 CH with a Music Labs Dac and Pre running through the Carver, but with the EQ auto setup thingy I am sick of moving speakers around chasing the rooms, I move every 2-3 years and its lotto on what type of room I have to set up in. Does these auto setup things actually work? I would've posted a new topic but I have no rights at the moment so apologies for digging up an old thread. Regards PJS
Gutty Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 my main gripe then was bottom end, they lacked grunt. How are the newer Yammy's in this regard. Not much has changed. I truely love my Yammy, but fater hooking it up to a power amp, the difference is like night and day. Given that you don't need HDMI, i'd be more inclined to look at HK, NAD, etc. Something with realistic output figures(more grunt), but not so many bells and whistles.
Hydrology Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 The RXV2700 with a Rotel RB1080 driving the fronts would be a nice setup.
