Hi Guys,

Just bought Panna 50PV60A, and wanting to know from all Panna users of what's a good HD STB for it.

I can only get it from HN as I bought my SD STB from em 2 months ago and they are more than happy to exchange it for HD.

I saw from another threat that Target has LG LST-6100 on special for $269.00, any comments on this unit?

http://www.target.com.au/html/catalogue1927/1927e16.htm

My brother uses Strong 5400 for his 42PV60A and he is very happy with it, however no HDMI output.

Cheers,

Don.

Got exactly the same display as you.

I have mine connected to the Philips DTR7200 and gives me perfect PQ.

Not sure if Harvey's sell them though.

Thanks Dr Teal, went to HN and got my self Philips DTR7200 for $370.00 which includes 4 years extended warranty.

Is that a good price? also how long have you had the STB for? and has it ever given you probs?

Since we have exactly the same panel and STB, would you mind if I ask of what your Picture set up is on your panna?

I set mine as follows: (which I followed from another thread in this forum)

DVD (via Component)

Mode: Standard

Contrast: 50 while burn in, will set to 78 after 200 hours

Brightness: 39

Color: 62

Sharpness: 9

Color Temp: Standard

Color Management: Off

D.PNR: Off

MPEG NR: Off

HD STB (DVI->HDMI)

Mode: Standard

Contrast: 50 while burn in, will set to 78 after 200 hours

Brightness: 46

Color: 47

Sharpness: 9

Color Temp: Standard

Color Management: Off

MPEG NR: Off

Cheers,

Don.

Hi Don

Firstly let me say that that is a very good price for the stb with the warranty.

I paid $340 but Myer were going to charge me $70 for wty so I told them no thanks.

furthermore I have had the TV set since 5/1/07 and I still can honestly say that the "wow" factor is still there every time i switch it on. This is one kickass panel.

Check the firmware on the stb is version 2.2. There an issue with sound dropping out on CH70 when it broadcasts in 5.1 due to CH70 using HDCP.

This is easy fixed by phoning Philips Sevice Centre in Homebush NSW and they arrange pickup of your unit at your doorstep and deliver it back to you the same at no cost to you.

I live in Adelaide and it took around seven days to get it back. I was aware that this unit needed the firmware upgrade when I purchased it... so.... because I was expecting it I was not disappointed.

I have had the unit for approx six weeks and it hasn't let me down.

I find that with our panel that setting the unit to 1080i (the default) resolution gives the best PQ.

Ch70 which is broadcasting at 576p looks fantastic.

My settings are pretty low to avoid burn in issues.

For the STB I via HDMI 1 (This is the recommended HDMI connection by Pana) I have my settings as follows

Brightness 18

contrast 16

colour 36

MPEG NR on

Colour management on

Sharpness 35

colour temp std.

The PQ is IMHO is very good on these settings.

Try it on yours and please get back to me.

I have the Pio DV989 dvd connected to Panel via HDMI2.

Again the settings as above and PQ is superb.

Enjoy .

Thanks for all the info, very helpful and useful.

Yes the firmware on the stb is 2.2, but what I have found is that the sound is much lower on the HD channels compare to the SD channels.

Only found out when I tried comparing HD to SD, watching Dancing with the star and the simpson last night.

As I was flicking through HD 12 and SD 10, I realised it was a big diffie in sound, I tried 70 to 7 as well and found the same thing.

Please please advise. :D

I tried your setting and found that it is a tad to dark IMHO, but maybe it's because I still have an el-cheapo component cable attached to the stb, will look for HDMI today.

How long is the HDMI needs to be before it affected the video and audio quality?

And finally what sort of DVD player would you recommend for the Panna panel?

My old trusty Phillips DVD player was bought back in 2004, still going good except that it neither play progressive nor interlace play, and it only shows as SD on the Panna Set Up Menu.

Cheers,

Don.

Hi Don

Great to hear yours has the 2.2 firmware.

Get your HDMI cable from Jaycar. I think its the Concord brand(best value for money). I got a 3m one and works perfectly. Costs around $39 or $49 from memory.

You will see an improvement in the PQ.

There is a drop of in sound in HD broadcast and this is normal it has nothing to do with your stb.It was explained to me from one of our Scientist's here at work why this is so.

The analogy is that a HD and SD broadcast are sent via a limited bandwidth. A HD broadcast contains

more information than a SD broadcast. The video information is significantly more as is the audio info which is dolby digital in HD as apposed to mpeg in SD. therefore the amplitude of the audio signal is less to fit it into the bandwidth for HD broadcasts without comprimising video quality.

I bought the Pioneer DV989 over a year ago. It is IMHO the best upscaler DVD player on the market for the money. It is pricey but the PQ is faultless. Upscaled to 720p or 1080i the PQ as commented by most of my friends looks like bluray.

Got the player from via store credit from Harvey's when i returned the Pio VSX 1015 avr to upgrade to the Pio AX4 which I bought from JB HiFi(long story).

From reading a lot of the posts the Pio 696 hdmi model has got very good reviews on this and other forums.

I have the previous Pio 686 model which is via component and is a very good DVD player. Will play almost anything you put in it. Pio 696 is also very reasonably priced.

Good Luck :P
