NEW YORK - Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). said Monday it is bringing out a cheaper player for Blu-ray discs early this summer, a crucial step in its battle to make the high-definition format the replacement for DVDs.

The BDP-S300 will cost $599, yet will have the same capabilities as the $999 BDP-S1 Sony is currently selling,

said Randy Waynick, senior vice president of the home products division of Sony Electronics.

Good news. I guess here that'll be around $999 given its the same price as the 60GB PS3.

thats a great step in the right direction for blu-ray. one of the main criticisms of the format was that it was too dear. if local players are around the $800-900 street price that'll go a long way to competing with hd-dvd on the value front.

both format have shown they have awesome video and audio and there is virtually no difference between the two.

that leaves studio support and region coding as the 2 major issues separating the 2 formats

I wouldn't bet on that price. This unit will still be over $1000. It is $100US more expensive than the Toshiba which is $1099 here. Rule of thumb on US electronics prices is double the price then add margin. I know that isn't what the exchange rate is, but we have always been gouged.

well the general consensus is that the toshy is a tad overpriced so it would make sense if the new sony is under the $1k and maybe even a tad cheaper than the ps3. in theory that would make sense but at the end of the day your guess is as good as mine

Thats the general consensus of us here. Look at any items price in the US and compare it with here. You will see the same pattern. I don't like it either.

yeah that does seem to be the trend.

it would seem silly to price it above the ps3, but it wouldn't surprise me.

that is great news for blu-ray and sony. not sure why anyone would pick the sammy once a player like this comes out !

i agree.

if these can be landed here off ebay, not at launch obviously, for about $700AU (same price i payed for my HDA1) i will definately buy one.

I think you'll be waiting a while for that price.

I predict an Australian price of $1099 to match the HD-E1.

same here, bit over all these hurdles and traps with the PS3.

Not only was the original Sony BD Player too expensive, it lacked basic features likes CD Playback and Ethernet connectivity!

bah, who cares - buy a CD player already i say!! the more a player becomes the jack of all trades, the more it becomes a master of none...

There is a Blu-ray/HD-DVD article in the Herald Sun today where they mention that they have just received a pre-production sample of a Pioneer BD player to be priced at $1,499. If this is correct in $AU then that seems way cheap compared to the Panasonic and given that the first Pioneer BDP-HD1 just recently released in the US retails at $US1,500.
