Forest Lake
A friend of has just moved into a unit complex and called up Foxtel to get connected he was basically told the body corporate would have to get every unit in the in the complex pre wired which will cost a small fortune. The boy corporate has given him permission to get it installed but at his own cost.Does anyone know of a company that sells Foxtel SATELLITE dishes or will come out and install it for him? as i believe you can purchase the sett top box from a telstra shop. Any help would be much appreciated.

rolfpf
There is more involved than just installing the Dish. Foxtel advised correctly. You see the cable that needs to feed to each unit would need to be RG6/U and not the RG59/U that in most probablity it is now. What this means is that each and every Unit would need to be wired with RG6/U BEFORE you can install the Dish. This is what Foxtel was telling you. Once the wiring was done they would then supply the rest. That is, the Dish, the Satellite Receiver and the Decoder. Send me an email if you need more information. dvduser
What this means is that each and every Unit would need to be wired with RG6/U BEFORE you can install the Dish. - rubbish, if the unit is a stand alone unit the dish can be mounted on your roof, the cabling done in your ceiling and wall cavities down to where you want the receiver to be - and the installers do this. I was the only one but body corp allowed. Any new connections they just dropped new lines from the box in the roof to that particular unit. whispa1970
Yes, Austar install at units, place a dish, Dual LNB and multi-switch for other units in the block, even if only one unit initially wants it. Keep on Foxtels back.

That only applies to a small unit complexes (about 8 units or less, that are also 2 strys or under) or a townhouse complex. If the unit complex is more than 8 units or 3 strys or over, then the whole pre-wire thing comes into play. Which these days means dual backbones and dual lateral cables from MS to wallpoint (to allow for PVR), actually I think the Fox spec is now a 5 line backbone, in readiness for the new sat's.... From my experience with it, the logic of AUSTAR/Foxtel is that the cable system becomes part of the Body Corps property, so they will not pay for it. As I was told – “we are a service provider, not an installation company....Power companies do not install electrical cabling, nor will Channel 9 install FTA cables” By all means hound Foxtel, unless you are in a large unit block, in which case get set to not have Foxtel, or start lobbying the body corp.….who will not listen to you if you are a tenant, in which case you need to get your unit owner onside, which means getting your property manager onside. Hosko
If you have a north facing balcony you could always do the old, stick metal tubing in a bucket, fill said bucket with concrete, attach dish to tubing. Some of the guys at work do this but that doesn't solve getting a STU in the first place. Dishes can be bought off ebay

Split the cost of the subscription down the middle and you both come out winners. If your mate isn't on the top package you could upgrade and he would still be saving mney. Foxtel will say that every unit in the complex has to get wired up because that is what most body corperates will say to the tenants as a put off so they don't have to bare the expense to install it. The difference in this case is the body coperate has given permission for a single installation. He should be able to have it installed as normal, or at the most show some proof the of BC's permission. If your friend needs any confirmation of this all he has to to do is drive around and look at all the unit/apartment complexes that have mutliple dishes on the roofs. ps The reason why all lot of body coperates don't allow single connections is so they don't get multiple dishes on the roofs. palmag
I faced the same problem when I tried to get Foxtel installed when I bought my unit. I was surprised that for a unit less than 5 years old there was no connection. I contacted Foxtel and luckly they had a promotion going where they did free installations. I contacted my body corporate (for which I am a member now) and got foxtel satellite installed for every one at no cost. Mind you our set of units is only 2 stories with 12 apartments. I would suggest contacting foxtel to get thier warrants for satellite installations, then contacting your body corporate. If there is a great demand for Foxtel your body corporate my raise a special levy and pay for it that way.
