Hi there

I seem to be getting conflicting stories about this issue.

I have read that, via the SCART terminals, you can have component input.

However, after emailing Panasonic tech support they said... "The DVD recorder does not accept component input through any of the terminals, it only accepts composite and S-video connections. This is because it records standard definition digital only "

So what is the correct situation ??

cheers

I've got one, and I can assure you that it does not have component input - it only accepts composite and S-video connections.

I have my Foxtel set up for component output to my sony Bravia 40" X which gives that an excellent picture. Foxtel is connected to my Panasonic Ex-85 via scart to scart.

The output from the Panasonic in turn is connected to the TV via HDMI which upscales recorded TV or Foxtel shows and DVD's.

Overall the Panasonic is a terrific SD recorder with one limitation which appears to be common with all DVD HDD recorders.

No component input!!

I wish the manufacturers would get their act together in this respect. :blink:

Thanks so much for replying.

Excuse my ignorance, but could I not connect my Foxtel box to the DVD-R with SCART to SCART ??

Would not that be a RGB connection and not composite ???

cheers

SCART can be used to get an RGB signal but the EX85 will not accept an RGB input. The SCART will only accept a composite or S-Video. The reason for this AFAIK is that it would make it too easy for people to record in a high quality for pirating material.

A few DVDR's had component input a while ago but since most have had this functionality removed

All the current LSI based DVDRs I have seen have component I/O including the fore mentioned MTV MDR5501 (still available), the MTV TS-2080 (still available on ebay) and the Kross TS-5188DVDR.

I use the component interfaces between my Panomax and 9077p PVRs and the DVDRs.

Now who said DVDRs only have analog inputs, take note those managing the stickys.

Im sorry to ask a redundant question , but its important to me as I was going to buy a Ex-85/75 specifically because of this feature (ie foxtel output to scart (RGB) on the Ex85) as i want to record foxtel in the highest quality possible.

My reading of the advertising material on the EX85 does seem to imply to my that it can accept a RGB via Scart - however not having the mannual/actual in front of me unit I may well have misunderstood this!

I do understand there is a difference between component & RGB , however on in the FAQ about foxtel on this forum it says:

Config B1rS2 - Panasonic DMR-EH55,DMR-EH65,DMR-EX75,DMR-EX85. Sony RDRHXD910,RDRHXD1010. Potential Foxtel display quality: Unknown, Record Quality: Very High

1. Foxtel's (tv)Scart output >---(Scart to Scart cable)---> DVD Recorder's Scart input (using RGB)(AV2 Panasonic)(Line3 Sony)

2. DVD Recorder's Component output >---(Component & Audio cable)---> TV's Component & Audio inputs

Optional 3. Foxtel's (video)Scart output >---(Scart to Composite & Audio cable)---> TV's Composite & Audio inputs

Note: Recorder must be on to view Foxtel if 3 (or similar) is not used.

This seems to say the EX series can accept an RGB input via its SCART ...So now Im confused :blink: ??????

Just because a device has a horrible Eurpoean SCART type connector does not automatically mean the device has RGB In/Out.

The SCART connector can be used to transport a variety of signals.

Composite

S-Video

Component

RGB

It is up to the manufacturer how the SCART is utilised.

Here is a website (one of many) that details standard SCART pin out configurations;

Going by what Panasonic has said you can input RGB via scart on AV2.

Dear DVEous

Thanks but I have read this & am aware SCART may or not be Component/RGB. I want to know exactly the situation with this particualar DVD-R as clearly there is conflicting info :blink:

ps Yes I hate SCART as well precisely because of stupid things like this but unfortuantely for reason best know to themselves, (?cheap) bloody foxtel use it :D Whose bright idea it was to adopt something developed by the French for goodness sake :P (SECAM anyone ) (although I will give them a tick for the metric system)

Thanks The1

Thats what Id read & gotten confused because now it seems some owners say it cant be done!

Rather than conjecture from the specs or manual etc, to be sure, I would really appreciate a post from some one who actually owns one of these units & actually has done RGB (or not) through the SCART input??

When the recorder is off, rgb can be passed though the av2 input and out the av1 output to your display.

When the recorder is on, it will only recognise either composite or s-video on the av2 input.

Thanks for the defintive answer Cummo!

So it does ACCEPT a RGB signal but wont let you RECORD it (hence the conflicting/confusing info).

Slightly sneaky of Panasonic (but no different to anyone else I guess :D )

(unfortunately a deal breaker for me so no excuse to buy a new DVD-R :blink: )

I don't know if you'd see any difference between RGB and s-video for a sh1tty Foxtel signal.....s-video looks okay IMHO (okay for Foxtel that is!).
