Blu Ray Regions And Samsung

Recommended Posts

So with the original Samsung BR player it was originally multiregion but through a firmware 'upgrade' had the regioning system turned on.

This has me wondering how long before we see a non-official firmware upgrade with turns the regioning system turned back off. And whether the same thing could be done with all the other players. At least non-PS3 ones...running on non official firmware there probably will be as much as a headache is it is with the PSP.

I was under the impression it was only a rumour that the first firmware update "added" region coding. I have yet to see evidence it was anything other than a rumour (very happy to be proven wrong). But either way, if it was region free previously, why in the 7 plus months since it was locked down has it not been hacked? And with 2nd gen machines from samsung on the horizon the window for it to be hacked is closing as attention will be passed onto this new model.

We have seen from migranes experiments that region coding can be affected by the firmware (on the samsung), but why still have we seen no solution? I suspect it is too small an issue affecting to small a number of people for it to warrant the attention of hackers. Now the PS3 on the other hand with a large install base that is growing may get that kind of attention in the short-term and may end up being the first BD device to get it's region coding hacked successfully.

That'll teach me to believe what I read on the intarweb.

True. Most people with players probably are US people and all they'd care about is local discs as well as Japanese ones for the Japanophiles amongst them both of which are in the same region.

Hopefully once the PS3 release in Region B countries settles a bit we'll see people handkerin for Region Mods and something might happen.
