Seven's No-frills Afl

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit amazed there isn't already a thread about Seven's AFL first night.

Maybe it's too early to judge but has 7 decided to forgo smart graphics, well-balanced sound and clever camera angles to take footy back to where it was 20 years ago? Or are they just cheapskates?

On the other hand I'm prepared to accept almost anything if there's no Eddie.

I hope they manage to balance the sound so that you can actually hear Bruce in future. And a bit of ambience from the crowd wouldn't be a bad idea. There was a classic Cometti-ism that went past so quickly I wondered if I actually heard it. Something to the effect of the player who was good in confined spaces then some mention of Ralph Fiennes. Brilliant.

The PQ on Prime was pretty ordinary. The usual lack of bit-rate I assume. Lots of artifacts.

Shocking pq, ordinary audio & camera-work that puts me off; too many close-ups of the action (I prefer to see a wider shot, showing the options the player with possession has) - there's no need to zoom right into a player taking an uncontested chest mark; & bad timing with the camera-switches - a player's about to have a shot at goal & we're about to view his shot from behind, which is preferable, but as he's about to kick, the view changes to a side-on & we have no idea where ball's going until it's about to land.

The last point is what puts me off watching golf tournaments on TV - you only see the ball [a] being hit flying in the air & [c] landing somewhere. I can understand how difficult it'd be to televise golf, but it shouldn't be that hard with AFL!

And 7's lack of Foxtel digital retransmission agreement also didn't help (on w/s foxtel anyway...)

I though the commentators were okay (Dennis good as always and Bruce was feeling his way back in), but the special comments were very ordinary, The Ox was s**thouse and Timmy just okay..

Watching Foxsports coverage of the Adelaide game, was like chalk and cheese... The commentators (Grybas, Healy, Lynch) and the game coverage were streets ahead.

I'll give Seven a pass this time, due to it being on the Gold Coast and not a larger venue, but they had better pick up their game quickly....

I agree, the coverage was very poor. It felt like I was watching an ABC state footy match. Surely they could have placed a mic in the crowd to give the game a little atmosphere? And the camera work was very poor, shaking all over the place.

The video quality was very poor for wide-high shots, the players on the field sort of blurred and became over contrasted.

The on screen graphics looked like they lacked and design skill or thought. I thought Channel 7 said they were going to improve the way football is broadcast and covered, not take this cheap ass amateur approach.

They'd better get into the game of HD broadcasting, switching to Letterman afterwards was quite depressing knowing how far this country is behind when it comes to providing quality video.

Improve!

Yes, the picture quality was absolutely disgraceful. Seems a little better tonight - seems they're on SD only. The coverage on 10 earlier tonight was so much better. Honestly though, you'd think 7 have run out of money paying for the rights - it screams "amateur hour" - they can't even get the commentators in matching suits (no, I know that's not essential, but some level of professionalism would be nice). I only watched for a little while - it was just too hard on the eyes.

The audio on 10's HD coverage sucked big time here in Adelaide for the Crows Port game. There was no presence, even the promo music they played in and out of adds sounded out of phase, it was so weak. You had to strain to hear the commentary - I had to increase the volume level on the AVR from -24 (normal TV setting) to around -16.

Gee Ch10 HD broadcast of its first match would make what we are now seeing look like they are taken with a 16mm camera and I really blame the AFL for not stepping in and telling the likes of $even to make their product look better

cheers laurie

Once again, Adelaide doesn't get the Hawthorn match. Yes, I'm a Hawthorn fan living in Adelaide. No sign of it on 7 or 10. I guess it's a Foxtel match.

I watch a lot less football these days purely because I rarely get to see my team play.

Can't wait for the V8's to go back to the 10.30pm timeslot on sundays.

Screw the fans, and they'll walk away and do something else. Respect the fans and they'll keep coming back.

G'day,

As a Hawks fan also, I'm actually making tracks to the Dome tonight. It's a Fox Sports game, so there's no other way to view it if you dont have it. Being in regional areas, there's no radio stations who want to take Triple M, 3AW or SEN's commentary of the game either. The ABC are at cricket

The Seven broadcast I'm a bit surprised about, very basic graphics, and last night in Cairns their timeclock kept on stopping, even with 16 seconds to go. Sure they've been out of the game for awhile, but didnt they employ the same people who did the graphics last time they had the rights, and why wouldn't they if they didnt?

There's no Sandy Roberts though, which to some people might be a relief, might be because he's doing the sport duties with Seven News in Melbourne

This Friday night, I think Seven will make a game of the W. Bulldogs v Brisbane game at the Telstra Dome. There'll be some atmosphere in that one.

But the only complaint I have is, Prime insist on putting on a Return To Program graphic everytime they come back from a goal. It just doenst seem right. I know back in the 90's they used to whack on a "Prime Sport" logo when they came back from an ad on the top left hand corner. That would probably be the thing to do again

But with little things like that, it's probably Canberra's Prime you complain to.

Also, Why wouldn't Prime be setting this in 14:9 if it's a widescreen production? The Movie afterwards "Article 99" was set in 14:9

And, once again with the Ten broadcast in the Goulburn Valley, Southern Cross Ten didn't make it into 14:9 as their reciever isnt' picking up the signal to convert it, It's gonna be a 4:3 game each week on Ten here, but Bendigo gets the 14:9 version (Good on ya Bendigo)

Wow you must have been reading my mind. Watching the 7even coverage over the past few days I have felt the same. I watch late night legends on ABC2 and the camera angels remind me of the 80's and 70's games.

The PQ? Well that leaves a lot to be desired. It's a shame nine has lost the rights.

And what the hell is with FTA coverage in Perth? 10.30pm for a derby you have got to be kidding me.

I watched some of a Ch7 football game (I'm in Melb) and the 7HD channel on the STB showed Ch7SD (or something similar) as per the tennis broadcasts. If anybody recorded the footy maybe they can check the bitrate.

Cheers,

Muzz

I would be prepared to lend or even give Channel 7 my tripod...

Someone ought to explain to them that the longer the zoom ..more camera shakes is evident.

What a disappointing experience.

I imagine they are using their own OB equipment and studio staff, unlike Channel 10 and Foxtel who use Global Television.

The production was appalling.......cameras were not properly set up for minimal lighting, angle were bad and discontinuous, direction was amateurish....just awful.

I'm normally a Channel 7 supporter, having trained there in the 1960's but what I saw would be unacceptable to Channel 31

Maybe it was because of the 2 unusual venues. Maybe when they get the Telstra, MCG etc it will get better. Maybe.

Channel 7 use Gearhouse who have built a truck especially for the AFL.

That why it was amusing when 7 said they wanted to show 4 games because they only ever told the OB supplier to cater for 2.
