Guest magiman05
Hi there, recently trying to setup my HT, recently sold my simba 5 speaker set (dream acoustic - below average) set on ebay. I need a pair of new speaker for front, centre, and sub (if within my budget), i try to squeeze everything into $1600 without changing my AVR, because need to spare about $2500 for LCD. my usage: 50% music, 50% movie Av receiver: Sony STRDB2000QS CD player: Cambrigde audio 640V2 this time try to get better speaker rather then keep soending to upgrade...wasting money. i went HT shopping for last few week, tested some wharf 9.5, 9.6, Aaron ATS5, legend, B&W 603, monitor audio B4.....found that 1) Wharf 9.5 - not as detail as 9.6 2) Aaron ATS5, better bass, less clarity 3) B&W.....may be good for classical but not my type and $$$ too 4) I like monitor audio B4, nice and clear, more detail.... 5) Legend....no comment.. my next audition Dali Concept 6, Dali Concept 8, Whatmough and USED monitor audio S8i (good review but hard to get centre and sub to match) OPTION 1) Just need some advise, if i want to keep my sony amp (save money) to choose a set of front, centre and sub, any recommendation? as some hifi guy told sony is a warm amp. i saw from other thread saying "Bright speakers may need a laid back amp, and a bright amp may need laid back speakers" OPTION 2) Change my amp, get front, centre. (Sub get later) please, any idea welcome.....thanks
Alfred Smee
I know that we'd all like a new set of speakers immediately if possible, but IMHO the best idea is to buy them in stages. Speakers are half the experience in HT and skimping now will annoy you down the track. Perhaps a pair of fronts now, a little later a centre, rears and finally a sub. Speakers are a very personal choice. I could not possibly recommend any to suit you. Only you can do that.

Totally agree I can admit that I took the "cheaper" option when I initially got into the HT scene. It quickly dawns on you that that HT can become very addictive and once you get over the initial thrill you start to question the "budget" equipment you purchased You are from what what you write at this crossroad. Get something which you will be happy with for a "long" time. I cannot comment on your AVR as I haven't auditioned it but trends and empirical experience indicate that once you upgrade your speakers the next "issue will most likely be the AVR. You will start wondering if you are getting the most out of your speakers from the signal they are being fed. The gist of what i am saying here is to look forward and if that means buying good quality components one at a time as your budget dictates then so be it. Unless you can get an absolute bargain for the money you have set yourself you will find yourself in exactly the same predicament in 12 months time. Goodluck
