Pirates Spec Releases

Recommended Posts

In a pair of Blu-ray firsts for Disney, the studio will unleash their premiere two-disc and BD-Java-enhanced titles when it brings the blockbuster 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films to the format this spring.

As first announced late last month, the studio is set to debut 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' on Blu-ray on May 22, just in time for the theatrical premiere of the third film in the series, 'At World's End.'

With expectations high for both releases to be a "trojan horse" for Blu-ray -- meaning the kind of huge A-list titles that will entice new consumers to finally dive into the format -- Disney appears to be pulling out all the stops to ensure that fans will not be disappointed.

Each title will be a "75GB" release, aka a BD-50 dual-layer disc for the movie, and an extra BD-25 single-layer disc with additional extras.

Tech specs include the usual 1080p video transfers and uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround tracks. Extras will replicate the existing, feature-packed standard-def DVD versions.

And exclusive to the Blu-ray releases will be two BD-Java bonuses. 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' will include "Scoundrels of the Sea," an interactive in-movie feature that presents facts on-screen about the legends and lore of pirates. 'Dead Man's Chest' will include an "exciting" new Java feature called "Liar's Dice," a single-player game shot in live-action HD video.

Disney has set a $34.95 suggested list price for each of the 'Pirates' flicks.

Nice.

With a separate disc for extras, I imagine the feature quality won't be compromised. Interesting that they went down the uncompressed PCM road rather than either Dolby's or DTS's lossless formats. Is there any advantage to this?

Perhaps it's a compatability issue.

Heh.

I expect the Extended Lord of the Rings films will be split over two discs just like DVD.

its crazy really. its a way of charging more for these titles I think ala the lotr special editions. with two blu-ray discs for each movie they are goign to cost a fortune !

maybe they need to look at using a losslless though more efficient audio format ala dts-hd master or true hd instead of the much more waste full pcm. as its been posted before that pcm chews up massive space even if theres 'silence' in the soudn track.

On the other hand, perhaps they just wanted to fill every bit of their BD dual layer disk, to prove that HD-DVD's 30 Gig is just not enough space :D .

What better way to prove it, than fill the disk full of 'wasted space' by choosing PCM..

Jesus. Can't we have any bloody threads here that don't devolve into HDDVD v BluRay.

lol, I should have checked first.

That is actually almost cheaper than importing.

Andrew.

almost. but I'm sure they'll be coded to hell.

It's funny that they don't have casino royale listed, maybe it won't be released for a while with only the 20,000 ps3 copies available.

The only lossless codec mandated in Blu-ray is PCM (although if converted from 24bit to 16bit, its not really lossless anymore, just RAW), hence why they must use PCM on discs.

Thankfully both movies are 24 bit 48 khz MeWhoElse -a step up from the 16 bit/48 of previous pcm blu ray discs. Is this what you mean by not lossless anymore - the previous discs I thought came from a different master?[the industry standard 16 bit?].I need a education in lossless :D

They dont strictly have to use pcm as the only lossless codec MWE as dolby digital and dts are also mandatory .They just have to pick one mandatory codec. In that case they can use say dts hd ma as a secondary codec and plain dts/dd as they do with films like the fastest indian.I thought the same until I read wikepedia

Will all current (inc the PS3) Blu-ray players be able to take advantage of the BD-J special features?

 I was wondering this myself! Best chance on the PS3 hence why it's the front runner for my BD playback duties.

Word is that features designed for the 1.1 spec of BD-J will NOT work on any player that does not support BDJ 1.1 which is currently ALL BD players including the PS3. None of these player can be upgraded to 1.1 (a question mark is over the PS3 in this regard).

1.1 is mandatory on all players made after 1 June 2007.
