Hdmi Cable

Thanks tonyjg but you are comparing a Kordz Diamond with silver plated cable conductors and 24k gold plated pins to a HDMI Tin-Plated Copper CL2 Rated Cable not really in the same price bracket, unless there is no difference in build quility of the cable or makes no difference to PQ I would go for the cheaper of two but somthing tells me that the Kordz Diamond is the pick.

What do you guys think go for the HDMI cable to futre proof (sort of) or stick with the goos ol component?

Component is pretty much as good as hdmi - and it's far easier to switch and is more reliable. However obviously doesn't carry a high-def audio signal. I guess it depends on what you want to do with your set-up in the long run. HDMI seems like it's here to stay and will future proof you for a while but if you're talking simply ease of connection, picture quality, then component is pretty much every bit as good as HDMI without the additional cost and switching problems. However, having said that, if you're also going to run a nice set of audio interconnects in addition to the component cables, then you need to factor in the cost of that as well. How the audio performance compares between my $100 digital audio interconnect, and that carried by an all in one HDMI cable (despite how good it is) I really have no idea! And I'm pretty sure your new tv (whatever it may be) will have a component input (or two!), and the fact that audio is run to it digitally probably won't make too much of a difference, because when you're serious about the sound, it'll be going through the home theatre speakers, and when you're not (eg news watching et al) - well, who cares? (add to the fact that currently your tv only has DVI so won't be getting any audio via the HDMI cable anyway!) The one thing that I have noticed however which is making me lean towards getting more and more HDMI stuff is that a lot of products will only output upscaled stuff through HDMI as it is digitally protected, whereas it's against the DVD consortium's law to upscale a DVD and output through component. If that sort of thing is a concern for you, then HDMI may well be worth the extra expense. It's also worthwhile checking how many HDMI inputs your Yamaha has - many only have say two HDMI inputs - that's quickly eaten up by an upscaling DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, a Hi-Def PVR/STB and a games console (ps3, x360 is component/VGA now, but will have HDMI in the future). You may well be stuck with having to use component for something, or getting yourself a 5 to 1 HDMI switch - which then asks the question - "Is it all too much?" at this point in time.

Have fun setting up the home theatre system!

If it were me I would go with the Krystal. Don't think the extra money for the Diamond is worth it. Although in for a penny.......

G'day,

I went looking for a 1m - 1.5m DVI-to-HDMI cable tonight.

The chain stores (Harvey Norman, Clive Peters, etc) only carry the Crest and Monster brands and the min price was $63 for 1.5m. Dunno about the quality of these so politely declined.

Jaycar only had a 3m DVI-to-HDMI cable for around $40 or so. I've got enough cable snaking around the back of my TV unit so a 3m cable is not an option.

The local Tandy didn't carry DVI-to-HDMI cable at all.

So I came home empty-handed, and I might need to get a 1.5m length shipped from one of the stores mentioned above. Who'da thunk it.

HTCustomcables have some 1 and 2 meter cables a bit cheaper than there standard stuff on their specials page. I had a 2m version deliverd yesterday. Yet to try it out as i'm waiting on my HTPC, but being Kordz, i'm sure the quality is fine.

I picked up a DVI-to-HDMI cable at Dick Smiths yesterday but the picture via that cable seems softer than the picture via component. Dunno whether it's the quality of the cable, quality of the DVI output of the STB, or quality of the HDMI input of the panel. I might order another DVI-to-HDMI cable and see if there's any difference when the Dick Smith cable is swapped out.

The "HDMI 1.3" thing for cables is a bit of a furphy. Any decently constructed hdmi cable will work with the 1.3 standard. However, it is possible to get your cable 'certified' for 1.3, which is probably what they're claiming - at least, it better be because there's no other justification for it. A non-certified cable (ie, just about all of them) will likely work without any problems, however it hasn't been tested to verify. That's the only difference.

Now it may well be a very good cable; but there's nothing extra about it that justifies a '1.3' tag and higher price.

Yes I to purchased one of the Razor cables from the special's page great price I must say. After dealing these guys I can highly reccomend them to anyone wanting to purchase from them I placed my order on Thusday night but I wanted to add to the order I forgot to add a component cable and the above mentioned DVI-HDMI cable. I rang them and they were only to happy to refund the standard $15 for shipping or send via express, I opted for the later so I could have them by the time I returned home from work (this morning) The cables arrived sometime Monday morning and my order was only finalised on Friday lunch time and that included them having to make the component cable aswell. Time for a sleep now and then I can start running cable.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking to spend no more then $50 on a cable and saw that the selby had a lower price for what seems to be better quality.

Any recommendations?
