Store Droids

Recommended Posts

Whilst I don't have a story about a 'store droid' in particular, I did have a rather amusing encounter this morning. I was visiting my local hifi store for a browse, and upon leaving the store I was greeted by a white van which had just pulled up at the lights, and a guy hanging out of the window asking me if I wanted to buy some speakers.

All I could do was smile and point at the store behind me. Gave me a good laugh

I dont understand why the story ends here and not with "Im now the proud owner of a set of <insert some obscure speaker brand here>. Also are speakers supposed to have this high pitched squeel" :D

MY DVD Player packed it in a couple of weeks ago. Not really wanting to blow a lot of money I decided on a $170 pioneer DV490 from Harvey Norman. Asked the sales guy about a HDMI cable and he suggested a $150 cable,(the name of which I cant remember. It was not monster though.). When I questioned him about the logic of buying $150 cable for a $170 DVD player he told me this cable would make the my $170 DVD player perform like a $600 player.

The worst thing is, there are so many people around that don't know even the basics of AV equipment, they'd believe such nonsense and make the purchase.....proud that they now have a superior DVD player (and probably boast about it to all their mates, too).

Gotta love marketing and sales tactics....

The best one I've heard recently is from a friend who went looking to purchase a new PC and was told buy the sales guy that he'd want to get Windows Vista because XP was riddled with problems and that was why Microsoft had brought out Vista and renamed it, instead of bringing out an update to XP.

Of course, I laughed and told my friend if he believes that, I'm no longer his friend

Heard about one salesman selling a progressive scan DVD player to a couple and telling them it would improve their picture even on their 28" CRT.

There are CRT TV's that do progressive scan so this may well be the case, certainly not bad compared to some stuff that gets quoted on a shop floor. In reality we are not that bad, go and stand on a shop floor in a major retailer in the USA, I've never heard so much crap flow so fast as you do over there.

But not my parents, neighbours, 10 year old Sony.

So is the story about your parents or your neighbours, it didn't read that way

My parents neighbours are an elderley couple who bought a DVD player that is progressive scan (or so am told). My parents told me they had bought it and that the couple had been told it would improve the picture. I asked what type of TV they had etc.

I don't think that really matters who it was however, the fact is I was told the couple had been told this, and have no reason to disbelieve it as many sales staff would either not have a clue or would make stories up to sell to an elderley couple.

There is a very good reason that robots can take on certain roles/jobs. Store sales robots will a leasst have the fact - or will they!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sad thing is 2-3 years ago I probably would have believed this BS. I must thank this forum for enlightening me. I had a Sony 68cm and a pioneer HTIB. Now I have a pretty good setup but am much lighter in the wallet. But wouldnt have it any other way!!!:D:P .
