Thanks SDL that's the E1, the new model the XE 1 is due to arrive, the E1 can be haggled to around $950

Interestingly, everthing except the title on that page is actually related to the XE1 (the links all say XE1, its the XE1 brochure etc) ...

So I wonder if that price is for the E1 (really crap price) or the XE1 (really good price) ?

Andrew.

~one guy over at HD world got a pre order price of 1350 after some haggling from CAV, my specialist has sold his first consignment out.

That's the XE 1

Is that CAV as in carlton audio visual. that is great news if theyre goign to stock the tosh hd-dvd players. they used to sell the tosh hd stbs so no reason they couldnt stock these tosh players. great news if its another specialist dealer supporting the hi-def formats.

Or considerably lower again if you know where. I paid less than the above on finance.

Yeah I agree, just a pity their site is a little misleading.

although you get a 'free' HD DVD

Andrew.

Toshiba puts Apollo 13 in every box, no skin of the store's nose! :D

....and yeh $1099 is the RRP so that's a raw deal for a HD-E1! For an HD-XE1, well that's a different story.

Just spoke to someone allegedly in the know mate, in the next 8 days supposedly, first consignment into the country may only be around 100 units, so I expect you may need to pre-order if you are really keen C.M., one guy over at HD world got a pre order price of 1350 after some haggling from CAV, my specialist has sold his first consignment out.

That's the XE 1

100 units ! .........surely more than that. Such a small number would be easily met by pre-orders already.

Toshiba really needs to ramp us its manufacturing capacity to meet the growing demand, probably one of the reasons why they haven't been pushing the advertising of HD DVD.

I'll check with Gold Coast HiFi tomorrow and see if they'll take a pre-order of an XE1( hopefully at a discount), I might just get lucky.

C.M

I am looking forward to the XE1. The only thing that has me concerned is the loud fan noise supposedly from this unit.

Spero, I understood these units were much quieter than the previous generation.

Now Apollo 13 is a title I'd really like to see in HD. I just love that movie. One thing I have to say, the pricing of the Toshiba HD-DVD players is so much more reasonable. Some of the Blu-ray players are nearly $3k.

Anyone seen Apollo 13 in HD yet? Also, what does the HD-XE1 offer over the older E1?

Daniel.

Apollo 13 on HD reveals the grain from the source on medium distance shots, but on close ups (like cockpit controls) it looks brilliant. The film in HD is great, not the best going around though.

Agreed its not the best around, but I still love it.

It was in the first batch of discs that I bought.

The shots of the rocket launching into space are breathtaking, as are the scenes from space looking down on the earth.

Apollo 13 is EXACTLY as it is suppose to look... it is designed to be a "grainy" movie, to simulate that whole era of the late 60s early 70s...

I feel it looks fantastic, and as I remember it looking at the movies.

It is a good "family" movie to be included.

Differences between the E1 and XE1 are similar to the A2 and XA2... except the E series include NTSC and PAL DVD playback.

Pretty much confirms what I had been told, first shipment being flown in, Castel wouldn't know if their a**e was on fire, couldn't organise a swim at the beach, couldn't organise a root at a brothel with a handful of fifties, if you get my drift

They would not know where Frankston is either, so no hope !
