Hi

I need to purchase a DVD player this week and it needs to be from JB HI-FI.

I have had a look around and read these forums months ago but have lost contact with the latest gear.

At the time I think I was going to buy a Pana S97

The TV I have is a HD 50" Pana Plasma

The only features I care for is the best PQ possible and that it plays DIVX

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

I've got a S97, over-rated trust me.

I also have a Panasonic Plasma.

Get them to order you in a Sony DVPNS76H Upscaling player. They cost $200 and plays DIVX.

The de-interlacing is superb, equal to if not better than the S97's Faroudja chip.

I used this Sony to replace my S97, you won't be dissapointed, trust me.

Whatever you do don't get the Pioneer 490v, they are rubbish. It has no film-mode processing for PAL film material and you get jaggies everywhere.

Hope this helps.

DV-696AV-S (RRP$299), you will get it at better price from JB HiFi.

Slim-line DVD player with HDMI output, SACD, DVD-Audio and DivX Ultra playback

Should be region free out of the box, hope this helps.

That's right, I remember looking into these last year, seemed like a good little unit, a pioneer from Memory.

How does this compare to the Sony they are talking about?

Yep it is a Pioneer I have just bought one to replace a recently purchased Sony DVPNS61P which is a lower model than the one mentioned above and was supposed to play Divx but didn't play too many of them.

The Pio 696 however has played everything I have thrwon at it. I have just bought a HDMI cable and changed the player resolution to 720p and even on my Pana SD plasma it has made a big difference.

So I would most definately recommend the Pioneer 696.

Edit: Picked one up from JB Hi Fi for $250

Kazz why would you upscale to 576 to 720 to rescale down to 480 inside the plasma? Have you tried just feeding the SD set 576p?

Yep and it may sound silly but 720 does make a difference, I tried it out because I noticed that the HD channels were much better than the SD channels, so I thought I would give it a go. Probably just me going mad, who knows. Didn't actually buy the DVD player for the upscaling but am very happy with it anyway.

I find that with my 50" Pana a LG player is good enough provided it has component/progressive out (576p).

The Pana screen does a decent job with upscaling 576p to 768p you don't really need an upscaling player.

Better to save that money for a Bluray/HD-dvd player when their prices drop in 12 months or so.

I have a Bose 3-2-1 and it's a rip-off. I wasn't the one who decided to buy it, but I have been very unimpressed when I use it. First of all, if it isn't obvious, you're only going to get surround sound from surround sound. I don't get the "surround sound feeling" from the two speakers at all. The player tends to freeze from time to time and is very difficult to start back up. I have even had to unplug it and everything once or twice. Worse yet, the player is only a few years old, and it recently developed lines that scroll from the top to bottom while any DVD is playing. For $1,000, you'd expect a much better item. I have not had either of these problems with much cheaper DVD players. For some reason, this was the player that my dad wanted to get. He probably thought that he was paying for high quality. Unfortunately, he got ripped off.

Like I said, it's a few years old, so maybe they've improved it and released a subsequent model(s). I didn't pay for it, so I'm not here for revenge or anything. I just wanted to mention that it's a weak product.

I'm confused.

you mean component out = progressive scanning? By "component", I assume you mean the "RGB" out.

By the way, another thing I wanted to ask is, does HDMI out makes a perceivable difference when viewing standard DVDs in general?
