Digicrystal Pvr And Connectivity

Recommended Posts

I'm about to upgrade our SD set top box with a Digicrystal 160gb Twin Tuner PVR from Strathfield for $269. Our system comprises: Legend LSD2 STB, Samsung VCR, Pioneer DVD recorder with 160mb, Technics Midi HiFi (about 12 yo) and Magnavox LCD Wide TV.

Question 1: Will the PVR act like a STB allowing the DVD recorder to record programs (as well as recording on its own hard drive)? In other words, can the PVR be recording a timer program, and the DVD recorder be recording the other program being watched?

Question 2: Can recordings on the PVR be transferred to DVD recorder to enable DVD recordings? The sales persons suggested that we need a SCART connection to do this, which the Pioneer DVD recorder does not have.

Does anyone else have a similar setup, or has any comments about the Digicrystal PVR?

Cheers

Tony

I'll start by saying that I don't own the Digicrystal so it's vaguely possible that there might be some reason why not but logically I'd have to say yes & yes.

Anything being output from the pvr should be able to be recorded by another device which has a compatible input.

ie if you can watch it on your tv, it can be recorded to a dvd recorder or vcr.

You just probably won't be able to set a timer for the 2nd tuner if it's the 9077 you're talking about.

All you need to do is match an output from the pvr to an input on the dvd (or vcr for that matter).

Not sure what that salesman is on about as the 9077 doesn't have scart but has composite, s-video & component connections.

The 9070 on the other hand has scart but is apparently a true twin tuner (ie record two programs simultaneously negating the need for the dvd recorder except for backups)

Which model are you looking at getting? Both the 9070 & 9077 have been reported as having bugs to various degrees but these have hopefully been addressed with recent firmware upgrades.

I suggest you have a look through the threads discussing them in this section.

Tonysti06 you need to read through the pinned topics at the head of this “PVRs, DVRs, HDD & DVD Recorders” and then move on to the 9077p/pamomax and the 9070p topics.

However to get you started I have both these PVRs and some HDD DVD recorders that I often backup onto.

The 9077p/pamomax have 1.5 twin tuners (watch 1 play 1) the 9070p have 2 twin tuners, according to pqs law. The 9077p/pamomax have 2 CVBS, a YCbCr plus svideo outputs, the 9070p has 1 CVBS output plus 2 scart outputs. The USB b socket is useless.

As for you questions I fully concur with Mr Flibble’s post

Thanks Mr Flibble, techo and jok11n for your replies. I bought it today but haven't as yet plugged it in. If it can do what I want for the price, I'm fairly certain that I'll be happy with it. Also, the salesman said that it's the latest model with the latest firmware... If I come into any trouble, I'll post about it and share my experience. Thanks again.

Tony
