Pioneer 507 For $4,800 Or Wait For New Panasonics?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I have been offered the Pioneer 50" plasma (507) for $4,800 from HN - I think it is a pretty good price (especially in Tassie!). While I much prefer the look of the Pioneers over the current Pansonics, the new Panasonics look very similar to the Pioneers (all black).

My parents currently have a 42" Panasonic (500 series) and I have been impressed by the picture. While I have seen the Pioneer in shops, the settings have been way off.

I watched the AFL grand final on a Pioneer 506 and was disappointed by the picture. It was very jerky (judder?) on fast camera pans. I didn't notice this on the Panasonic. Has anyone else noticed this problem and is it present in the new model?

Any other thoughts on the Panasonic versus Pioneer decision?

Thanks in advance!

Brad

Could have been the source wasn't the best, hence the judder. Should be better this year though with Channel 10 broadcasting the Saturday night games in HD!

No date announced for the new Panas but people are guesing around July to October.

Has anyone seen the Pioneer 507 under $4800???

cheers

Was in a Melbourne JB on Sunday, they had the 507 marked at $5200. Said to the salesguy, "I'm looking to get one of those for my father next week, assume you will do it for less than $5k". His response - "yes, well under $5000". I'm assuming that would be less than $4800, or maybe just my optimistic interpretation of the word "well"???

regards

I was buying a MP3 player and headphones for my trip to Canada (JB Hi Fi Myaree) about 2 weeks and was looking at the same Pio. Guy offered it to me for $4800 without any negotiation so I suspect there might be a bit more room to move on it. This was in Perth where prices tend to be higher than the Eastern States?!

The best item I have ever bought for international air travel is my Bose noise cancelling headphones.

They are absolutely brilliant and they have just bought out a lighter pair (my only issue is thay a re a bit heavy).

If you travel for work and need to arrive (reasonably refreshed) they are great.

I know Bose products are not that favoured by this forum but my noise cancelling headphones really are good.

Yea, I bought the Sennhiesser 70% reduction ones.

Absolutely fantastic although wish I'd spent another $100 and got the 80% reduction ones.

The two pronged adapter meant I could use it on all the planes I was on too.

Sorry for going OT but thought this deserved a reply.

Agree they are good (also Bose do decent studio/performance speakers but their consumer stuff- URK!). Another option is noise blocking headphones (earbuds)- if you don't mind the in-ear type (v soft silicone flanges), I can recommend Etymotics ER6i. These are pocket sized, block as much noise as the battery powered noise-cancelling ones, provide excellent reproduction for the $, and can also be used to block noise while you sleep. Never runs out of batteries. Lot s of other options as well.

This shop has a large stock of different headphones and are nice guys (they also make good kit loudspeakers inc subs and home theatre speakers, and are located in Leederville Perth).

Headphonics

For normal listening you should check out the Alessandro/grado headphones

http://www.alessandro-products.com/headphones.html

http://www.headphones.com.au/prod_one.php?productID=19#top

These are "tweaked" SR-125s, which are already amazing (and only $150 which is cheaper that the SR-125s in the USA!!!). Lots of top streophile awards.

They look like WWII bakelite headphones but just sound amazing- listen to your CDs through these and the music gets a new lease on life. I made the mistake of starting to do this with my SR-80s (small sister to the SR-125s) at 11PM one night and stayed up to 1AM! You MUST make sure you get the "comfy" foam pads not the default rubber earpads (Sennheiser yellow pads also fit but look pants).

On-topic, I got the 50" 600A Pana and think it looks alright physically. Amazing PQ if fed from a good progressive scan DVD player. The Corpse Bride looks astounding, can't see any pixels etc at normal viewing distance, it is sharp as. My DVD player is a Sony (unfortunately, I hat egiving money to them but Philips and Pana were between models when I bought it, so couldn't get any other player with a decent progressive deinterlacing chip at the time... on the + side it was de-regioned).

Check my other posts re waiting for 1080 line 50"... don't bother IMHO. If you go to 60" or above start thinking HD formats.
