having an Xbox 360 + HD DVD add on and a PS3 i think im not as emotive in my view of the format war, but this post isnt about that, this is a short review of 2 blu ray movies and a quick comparo to a coupla hd dvd's...

OPEN SEASON (br), ohmy goodness, this is without question the best picture i have ever seen, absolutely gorgeous, awesome color, razor sharp, a perfect reference wow disc, the movie itself well the story is no pixar, even wife whom shuns my expensive toys was amazed at the pq, sound is very good, though im only using optical 5.1 (hdmi for picture). I guess we all knew animation such as this and upcoming pixar/disney releases will be nothing short of brilliant.

BLACK HAWK DOWN (br), again a very good picture, not as good as above or the hulk, but superb nonethless, has very desert beige tones and not bright and colorful, but still sharp and crisp, though i found the look to be grainy (though i havent seen the dvd or film release to compare to it so i guess its directors intent)

have also Hulk, Aeon FLux, Batman Begins and for old times sake both the Lethal Weapons on hd dvd. as you all probably know from reviews or first hand, hulk is excellent, aeon flux and batman are certainly way up there in terms of pq. both formats as far pq goes deliver to me the same, its probably title dependant if there is a stand out candidate release. ive seen the tier system over at avs, my feeling is the tier 0 ones will all soon be animated ones, followed closely by heavy cgi movies, its good to see black hawk down having such a good picture without the techno tricks. my sound system is 5.1 optical so sound to me is all good, not great, and i have no experiecnce with the new sound formats....

There has been much talk about how good Open Season is so good to get some local confirmation. Am also glad BHD is a good BD also.

Agree with mark, a good mature post. A few more of these please...

interesting comparison.

I said it in one of the other threads that if I could get a dedicated BD player for under $500 without region coding then I would jump at it.

This format war is not over by a long shot, and I realise that to see some of the movies I want to see (new James Bond is a classic example) then BD is the only way for the foreseeable future.

I just wish some of the fanboys could direct their anger to the companies who are forcing this format war on us, rather than those who have chosen to buy into the 'enemy' technology for whatever reason.

Andrew.

Andrew with all due repect i dont think we really needed the us against them stuff again in this thread. it would be good to keep "fanboys" and "format war' out of this one.

when open season is released locally i believe its the same day as the local ps3, will we therefore get a blu ray version locally i wonder!?!?!...

....getting a ps3 as cheap as an xbox 360 was the deciding factor into getting both formats, if one loses, whomever it is i have a great gaming console still!!!!

NOICE!!! :D

Sounds great, nice review. :P

I'll be interested to hear more of your experiences with a locally sourced BD player. I've never owned anything other than Region 4 DVDs, and am likely to be equally unsophisticated in the future. I'm keen to see if the reality of BD region coding is such a big deal, particularly if you're like me and only ever buy discs from Big W 2 years after they have been released...

(Just to clarify - I can completely understand the stance taken by many on the region coding issue, but I've never felt affected by it. So far...)

Cheers mom. I've only started spending time in this sub-forum over the last couple of weeks. Let's just say work has suffered HUGELY in the last couple of days in particular.

It's a lotta fun, eh? :D

Tell me about it. Lets hope the boss doesn't pull up the net usage stats he he. Not sure I can convince him this is work related.

It's great fun. Great people. Good info and sometimes, like the past few days, good fisticuffs.

They can do that? :blink::D:P

Might be heading to South America earlier than I had planned... :P:P

I know at my work place they can and have in the past when needed. I guess it depends on your organisation and how strict it's reporting systems are. I know in my business they are one of the most important things.

Bad luck for me. Hmmmm, think I may go quiet during the day from now on and spend 6 hours catching up after work.

A Polish mate at work got sent a whole list of sites, asking him to provide evidence that they were "work related". I guess the filters were never set up for Polish porn.

As Mike R would appreciate, they were some damn fine sites!!!

Speaking of going quiet, that's it for me. This 2 hours ahead thing can catch you out...

Night all!! :D
