Stets Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Hi Guys, I am currently speccing the equipment for my dedicated home theatre room and am having difficulty deciding between an AVR or a pre-pro and amp setup. The options that I am considering are the Denon 4306 versus the Rotel 1068/1075 combo. Front (& centre) speakers will "probably" be Wharfedale Evo 30 although I am still considering the Paradigm Monitor 11's (any other suggestions in this range to audition?) I picked up my new Velodyne CHT12 sub last week as I got a good deal on it. Video will be through a Mitsubishi HC5000 Anyway the point of all of this rambling is "future proofing" By using the pre-pro & amp setup as future technology develops I can retain the amp and only upgrade the pre-pro. However, my understanding is that the TrueHD/DD+ standards require the bandwidth of HDMI which the 1068 does not have so would I be buying a system that is already out of date? Also, due to the lack of HDMI on the 1068 I would need a HDMI switch. Is there a "reasonably priced" Pre-pro/amp combo that does include HDMI TIA
vitamins_e Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 hi all I am also lookin at new receivers. even as i m a denon fan, the good reveiws attracted by Sony STR DA-1200ES interest me. Has anyone bought this? Is it as good as the feedback by WHATHIHFI? They chose it as Product of the year. Any comments welcome. Aspect Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I am in exactly the same boat as Stets. I was all ready to get a Denon, but after a bit of reading, don't know whether I should be going for a smaller AVR and something like the Elektra 7... My speakers will come later... Cheers, Chris
fawlty99 Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 AVRs will get new technology quicker than a dedicated prepro and are far more cost efficient. That being said a dedicated prepro should give better performance than an AVR and are hard to beat (sound wise). I'm running an AVR with HT amp and am very happy. Would I rather have a dedicated prepro? Well yes assuming I could afford one & it had the processing capability of my Denon. For me with the new sound formats becoming available I would not spend big on either an expensive AVR or prepro yet. A cheaper AVR + good amp will do me.
