do you support the original contention that Blu-ray has nothing to do with DVD?

The technology may differ but while we have Blu-Ray players that also play DVD's then it becomes a bit less clear to the average consumer, how would your average sales drone go explaining to the consumer that the player is not related to DVD, it's totally new, something you just have to get, oh and it plays your DVD's as well...... so it's not DVD, but it plays DVD, the average consumer may have a bit of trouble with understanding it.

People have DVD recorders and still talk about taping their favorite shows on DVD, when did DVD become a tape format, did we miss another format war :D Even people with PVR's talk about taping their favorite shows, no tape in PVR's either (unless of course Topfield are working on some other 'coming soon' model that has so far escaped the super sleuths on this forum), people just use terms that they are familiar with, not every consumer is tech savvy, if you start speaking techlonese © too often you scare away the customers.

The marketing machine just dumb things down so that consumers don't feel stupid, they are all about selling products not educating consumers on technical terms, for some reason these new formats seem to attract the most zealous of fans, someone in another thread went to the trouble to point out HD DVD was the correct term, not HD-DVD as was commonly being posted by the ill informed, obviously less intelligent individuals that frequent these forums, does it matter how you spell it, hell no, half the people on forums can't even spell (or type like a 15 year old sending a text message anyway :P )

/end rant

You nailed it.. DVD is a word in the public domain, and becomes part of the english language. Sony was part of the original DVD consortium anyways weren't they? So who is too say their faction wasn't the true successor?

Fair? Was DVD fair to VHS & S-VHS? Come on, your pulling my leg

Daniel.

now there we go. Ignoring the competing formats, S-VHS was vastly superior to CHS, yet it lasted a whole 5 mins. Shame cause my S-VHS player was the best I ever had. Got it at the same time as a DVD player and as such it got next to no use.

But so was Toshiba so I'm not sure that's such a good comparison, actually I think from memory Toshiba even released their DVD player first

Im sorry, but I dont understand what you meant with this comment. If I was truly a HD-DVD only zealot, I wouldve said the opposite and been happy to tarnish BR with the same brush. Im not saying DVD is bad, but we've, or rather Ive, moved on from it.

I think you'll find "windows" used to be a public word.. 1 window, 2 windows..

What I meant was..

* could you really believe that whether its fair or not has anything to do with anything?

* had you forgotten about how DVD suceeded VHS when feeling sorry for how its not "fair" for the format.

i.e the pot calling the kettle black

I apologies if my comments are really that unclear. Is everyone else having trouble following me?

Daniel.

You seem to be stuck on my use of the word "fair" in my original post. BR is not DVD, it is a very distant cousin, which is what I was referring to in my post, based on another members comments.

While I agree regarding succession, I don't recall any actual print from the DVD forum on manufactourers saying DVD was the successor to VHS. Thats a tag that came way down the track and from retailers.
