Group Purchase.

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I've re-read the rules, but it seems a bit like it's up to a mod's interpretation.

I wan't to buy an LCD panel, and I've been offered a deal at a better price than anything I can find on the net, for a job lot of 10 or more. You'll notice I've not mentioned the product (don't want to get kicked for asking!), but is it OK to see if anyone else wants to join in?

Regards,

Pcal

Plenty of others seem to try/organise group buys here.

Organising a group buy for a product is probably okay, but organising a group buy from a retailer might be closer to crossing lines.

By all means, discuss the product and the price, but perhaps refrain from publicly mentioning where the deal is being struck.

There have been plenty of group buys on this forum over the last few years. Many don't get off the ground, but a few have been very successful. I bought my DVD player through one set up by a fellow member and got a great deal.

One tip is to see if you can organise it so forum members still order directly from the retailer which avoids potential issues with warranties and delivery. For example get a list of interested parties so you know the ballpark numbers and negotiate a group price with a retailer. Members of the group buy can then order directly from the retailer at the agreed price by mentioning your name. You shouldn't need to publish the name of the retailer on the open forum.

This will also encourage more people to participate, as it removes the fear of depositing the money into some anonymous bank account and hoping that your purchased product actually arrives.

OK. I am officially confused...

It seems the consensus is that its OK, but I got an e-mail directly from one of the moderators saying "The group buy arangement would be not be supported by DTV Forum."

If a moderator replies to the thread saying it's OK, then I'll post the details of what I've been offered to see where it goes, and if not, then I won't.

Regards,

Pal

I suspect that what the moderators are saying is that they (or DTV Forum) will not accept any responsibility for the outcome if a group of forum members organise a bulk buy amongst themselves through these forums.

Fair enough too.

Seems like a logical assessment... (Oh well, here goes)

The unit I've been offered is a Humax LAU40TPVR

http://www.humaxdigital.com/australia/prod..._lau-40tpvr.asp

Readers Digest version...

40" LCD with inbuilt analog tuner, SD tuner, and 40Gb PVR.

Inputs: 1xDVI, 1xRGB, 1xSVHS, 1xComponent, 3xAV, 1xUSB (for additional external HDD)

Outputs: 1xAV 1xS/PDIF

The price I've been offered for 10+ units is $2080 each (freight free in Adelaide, plus freight elsewhere). I'm told RRP is $4999 but I haven't seen them for that much anywhere yet.

Over to you guys....

Regards,

Pal

OK, so the pvr is tiny. If you care about your pvr, you'll already have a separate one anyway (like I do). As I said, it was the LCD display I was interested in - the pvr is just a small bonus so far as I'm concerned... and you can add to it with an external hdd via usb if size is important to you
