hornblower
Its true enough for the cable system, but not for the existing sat system. When Optus D2 is launched that will change. Of course, there is a large difference between having the space to run 100 more channels and actually running 100 more channels. How many channels end up being added (and how much it'll cost the subscriber to see them) remains to be seen - remember this is Foxtel and they, like Telstra, have difficulty with the truth. I am not sure how this stacks up. I assume that cable is also bandwidth limited, having to share Foxtel analogue and digital channels as well as Internet connections. Recently Bigpond "upgraded" my cable connection to "extreme" which is reputedly significantly faster than the standard connection. However I have noted that occasionally the new modem affects Foxtel causing significant pixellation and even total loss of signal. This only happens if streaming large amounts of data such as Google Earth. hornblower
DrP
Each analogue TV channel on Foxtel's cable was 6MHz wide (I'm fairly sure anyway). 6MHz on cable allows for DVB ~36Mbit/sec depending on the precise configuration. If all the analogue channels are turned off, that means a lot of bits free to do whatever with, and that assumes that Foxtel continues to use 6MHz wide 'channels' for their DVB transmissions. There's nothing compelling them to, they could use 7MHz and push more bits per mux over all (less over all space wasted via spacing to keep RF channels apart). How much of that freed up space will be used for DVB and how much will be used for DOCSIS is anyone's guess. That your Foxtel and internet service interact is nothing more than evidence of a fault of some sort which you need to get fixed. They operate on completely different frequencies and should not affect each other at all if all is right.
jokiin
I don't want to start attacking the guy... but just have a look at some of the comments that he's posted. (It's a pity the forum won't let you view a list of all posts from a particular user) Click on the user name and view all posts by that user http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?act=Sea...sult_type=posts As I have said often I have seen nearly every show shown on several of the Foxtel channels several times as episodes and series are not shown in entirety, so addind SciFi really has added nothing to my viewing and I'm sure a lot of others that have had Foxtel for a few years. Same here, we need content not more channels that will spread the content thinner and increase the repeats
Hosko
Satellite has always been a digital transmission - the analogue shutdown had no effect on the satellite distribution. I'm sure others on this forum can back me up on this claim... Yes but the Analogue shut down is timed at the same time the new sat goes up. One free's sapce on the cable system, the other creates space on sat system. So both will have free space. I actually agree with the business sense of keeping the all the same. You don't want people who can be hooked up to cable wanting to be on sat as it costs more.

Rockets can be little buggers like that... most of the time they work, but just occassionaly..... kaboom!
