When I watch DVDs/CDs, I can get 5.1 channel sounds Okay.

When I watch Digital Free to air TV, I can only get two channel stereo from my pioneer HTIB.

My SETUP

Pioneer HTZ151DVD HTIB.(receiver+dvd in one)

Samsung F series LCD TV.

Dgtec 8710 HD STB.

Samsung is connect to Dgtec via HDMI.

Pioneer DVD player is connected to Samsung via Component

Pioneer White/Red Audio cable is connected to Samsung White/Red Audio Out.

(I tried connecting the Pioneer white/red cable to the back of the Dgtec white/red socket, but I get no sound

at all.)

My Dgtec HD STB, has a SPDIF connector on the back.

Problem is my Pioneer HTIB doesnt have a Digital Optical audio input.

So I cant connect the two together.

I was thinking of purchasing this to connect the Dgtec STB to the Pioneer HTZ151DVD HTIB.

Will this allow me to get 5.1 channels for Digital Free to Air TV?

Any help would be great.

im not sure that its gonna be any help to you, from looking at it, it just looks like it expands the number of inputs you can use. You wont get 5.1 out o fan analog cable which is why you need to use optic but depending on how they connect up that other unit i dont think you have the inputs on your system either way, only way i can see to get around it is to buy an av receiver and get rid of the pioneer. even that will depend if it was home theatre in a box type of thing where the speakers might be 6 ohm which wont help the cause either. Just out of interest why would you want 5.1 coming from the set top box anyways, dont think much broadcasts in 5.1 apart from the odd movie. better off putting it in a 5 channel stereo mode so atleast your getting audio through all the speakers

You won't be able to decode DD5.1 broadcasts from the STB if the Pioneer does not accept digital audio. And I presume it doesn't have 5.1 analogue inputs, so there's nothing you can stick in between the STB and the HTIB either. (Which would probably cost the same as a new receiver anyway.)

But the truth is, is that you will miss out on very little, as DD5.1 broadcasts on FTA DTV are pretty rare. And even in those rare instances, it is not unheard of for a movie to start in DD5.1, go to DD2.0 during the first commercial, and stay that way for the rest of the night!! :D:blink:

Can you simply use Dolby Pro-logic or similar for the STB?

Thanks both of you for ur answers.

I wasnt aware that there wasnt much DD5.1 in free tv.

I guess I wait till the end of the year and get a new av reciever.

That look like the only option.

if both your dvd player and set top box have coaxial digital out how about just a 2 female to 1 male rca splitter from dick smith for $3. it would work as long as both are not on at the same time

While on the subject on Audio setup, I myself have recently purchased a new home stereo system and being new to all these modern ways of connecting things, I have 1 slight problem.

There is an input on the subwoofer for each of the rear, centre and front speakers and my television only has 1 output for audio. Obviously 3 do not go into 1.

Is there anything I could do or buy which would allow me to connect these 3 seperate red/white cords into the TV.

Thank you.
