leseven
Hi guys Does ayone know the roughly how much a cabler/sparkie would charge for cabling my room up for surround sound? Basically I need to run 4 sets of cable to the back wall (7.1 setup) and 2 sets to the front speakers. The run should be quite straight forward i.e. cable to go into wall, then down under the house and back up to other wall. The room is only 3m X 4.5m and the house has decent clearance to the crawl space underneath. I was about to do it myself but I'm worried about drilling into 240v. I was going to buy a 240v finder at Jaycar but the guy there reckons I'd be risking my life by just relying on the finder. He also mentioned that turning off the Main is not totally safe either. So basically I shouldn't do it unless I know what I'm doing which I don't when it comes to electricity. Hope someone can give me an idea on the price. Cheers. glennb
Can't see how turning everything off at the switchbox wouldn't make it safe to do? And i'd be running 6 sets (3 x 2prs) to the front, to allow for bi-amping or bi-wiring of the Main L&R and Centre speakers. Might as well have the cable there if your going to do it. Firstly, simply check where your power outlets are, maybe even have a look under the house for power cables and see where they run(though most likely will be in the roof...possibly get up there and have a look). Should be pretty easy to figure out roughly where in the wall the power cables will be. Second, simply turn off the mains, and all subswitches too if that makes you feel better, check with some kind of appliance or multi meter that the power point is not active, and maybe also check stuff like your oven to see that the main power truely is shut off.....then do it yourself. Unless you're some kind of scaredy cat P.S. Coming up through the floor, is sooooo much easier than down from the cieling cavity
quijibo
You'd be lucky to get it done for much change from $200. Most sparkies I know wouldnt be interested in doing it for less. It should only take about an hour so its money for jam. I'd just do it myself, it really is easy, and if you say you have enough clearance under the house then it wont be too hard to see where your mains cables are. They should be under the floor if you dont have a slab. Turning off everything on your switchboard should make it safe. It's pretty hard to seriously electrocute yourself unless you actually grab the cut wires anyway so I wouldnt be too concerned... but please dont quote on that. ballboy
I had the fun job of running cables under the floor last night for my new modest HT system. Mine is a bit og a ghetto job as I ran the cables up from the floor against the skirting board as I am having carpet laid tomorrow so had access to the bare floor. Is a little messy but the carpet will hide that. Now I just hope I can hide the speaker cables behind the speaker stands as well as I told my wife I could
