Sony Declare's Blu-ray The Winner - Again

Sony's New Blu-ray Marketing Theme: Format War is Over

Sat Feb 10, 2007 at 02:11 PM ET

Seizing on widely reported January sales numbers from Neilsen VideoScan, a Sony executive said Friday that the studio plans to begin marketing Blu-ray as the winner of the high-def format war.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment worldwide president David Bishop made the comments to trade newspaper Video Business in reaction to widely reported Neilsen/VideoScan sales figures indicating that Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD in January by a ratio of 2:1.

"The message that we’re going to put out to the consumer now is, now it is safe to make a choice," explained Bishop. "No more fence-sitting is needed... We have a critical mass of content, we have the biggest mass of consumer electronics companies in the world supporting this format. That has moved Blu-ray into the forefront."

Adding further credence to the previously-released VideoScan numbers, studio sources told Video Business that for the first three weeks of January, the top selling Blu-ray title ('Crank') sold 7,500 units, while the top selling HD DVD title ('Batman Begins') sold 4,100 units. In a business traditionally dominated by new release disc sales, 'Batman Begins' on HD DVD is something of an anomaly, as it was released back in November.

And yet while all agree that it was a strong month for Blu-ray, opinion is split on whether the surge in sales is an indicator of stronger user adaption of Blu-ray compared to HD DVD, or simply a reflection of the larger number of new Blu-ray titles that hit the market over the month -- 25 new Blu-ray titles were released in January, compared to just 11 titles on HD DVD for the same period.

One thing is for sure -- after months of playing the underdog to HD DVD, Blu-ray is now the format to beat. And with many more announced titles for Blu-ray in the coming months than there are announced titles for HD DVD, it doesn't look like this overall trend will reverse itself any time soon.

Expect the next round of mainstream punditry to come later this month with the release of the per-format sales figures for two of February's most eagerly anticipated dual format titles, 'Babel' and 'The Departed.' An apples-to-apples comparison of disc sales of the same title on both formats is expected to serve as a leading indicator of consumer acceptance for both HD DVD and Blu-ray.

why is it that the blu-ray camp(including its band of fanboi-fanatics) keep on parrotting that they have 'won the war' is beyond me.

I just dont think they realise jsut how early it is. hardly any significant percentage of the buyign public even own a hi-def player as yet let alone a hi-def tv or ht setup to fully enjoy the benefits. Once we have the mass market consumign these items we might have some idea as to the uptake of the formats. At present my take is that both are a losser. If they had a greater presence in players, brands and material they might have a chance to move themselves out of the tiny little niche they occupy. At present the mass market is buying and own dvd players and will continue to do so unless somthing changes significantly.

the reason why is pretty obvious. if it didn't upset you so much you might see why.

The Blu-ray studios seem to think if they flood the market with a large volume of titles then they will win over the public to their format which is a strategy that will cost the studios big time as the Blu-ray standalone player sales are minimal by comparison to that of HD DVD.

It is analogous to the government printers punching out a huge volume of bank notes and then believing the country is rich, if anything it is a last ditch effort before the inevitable downturn.

Hi

...still a longway to go(IMPO) but consumers will be the winners, as far as Disc Players go , with the Price war starting to hot up. The American that took over as Sony CEO last Year was quoted as saying this is one format war Sony is not going to lose so interesting times ahead.

Basil

Cause they dont have lives and as a result have nothing better to do than squawk about a product that they dont even own!

HAHAHA....I love the title to this thread. Sony declares Blu-ray winner again....Thats right not the consumer......nor some important independant authority.......yes you heard right..................SONY.

Just a coincidence of cause that they OWN BLU-RAY. lol.

Now all you mindless sheep consumer's head out and buy a blu-ray player....as WE said the format war is over:)

Don't think I will be following Sony's advice just yet......I'm one of those current fence sitters:) that Sony is talking about. Who know's who will win out...maybe one format, maybe neither, but I agree it is way too early to state yet.

In the meantime let them fight it out......as already mentioned we the consumers will be the winners in the end:)

Will be glad when it is clearer which way it is heading so I can buy one of these players:))))

As Momaw initiated this thread,... Like me, I gather he is also purchasing the PS3 when its launched.

Although considering this article relates to US releases, if the trend continues .. it may not apply here.

I hereby declare that:

1. I no longer have to pay taxes,

2. I have $1 billion in my bank account,

3. I am married to Claudia Schiffer and I am seeing Jennifer Hawkins on the side

Hey, apparently according to Sony all you need to do is publicly proclaim it and it becomes true.

See you later guys, I'm off to try and convince Claudia and Jennifer that its time for a threesome.

Andrew.

Let me re-word a couple of bits there:

"The American that took over as Sony CEO President of the United States last Year was quoted as saying this Vietnam is one format war Sony The US is not going to lose"

There. Perfect

I am so bored of hearing this.

I was almost tempted to pick up a BluRay player because I'm beginning to run out of HD-DVDs to buy, but this sort of trickery doesn't sit well with me.

Just bought another 15 movies and will stay a HD-DVD only supporter.

Im not anti-Sony, never have been! I've owned many many Sony Products over the years (and still have a couple) that have given me a great run for my money.

What I do object to is the lack of substance coming from the BD camp; I was hoping BD would win until the shite overpriced players and average MPEG2 based BD movies finally started appearing and so I went and BOUGHT a HD-DVD player instead and I haven't looked back!

Sony had better convince their own supporters first I think. Why would they be releasing laptops with HD-DVD drives? The Samsung M55, the LG Xnote S1-P555K and the Acer Aspire 9800... I thought these 3 companies were strong BD supporters?!

And with that comment, your troll status is confirmed.

Play the ball, not the player etc.

And once again, which player do you actually own ?

Andrew.

i've started quite a few interesting threads of late showing how well db is doing compared to HD DUD, unfortunately it attracts the typical rabid response.

Really, could you point me to one of these threads? I've only seen one filled with inaccuracies and designed to cause a disruption rather than further debate. I must have missed the others.
