DrWorm
What is the VCR SCART connection for on the Humax PVR-SMART? The manual says very little about it, except it is to "Connect your VCR/DVD" to. What I don't get though, is it input, or output? If it's input - if connect my DVD player to it, will I be able to watch DVD's through it? Will I be able to connect my DVD player using RGB component video cable? If it's output - why would you use it instead of the TV SCART connection? What functionality does it provide?
tonymy01
Google should be your friend here. Most Euro devices have 2 scarts, one for typically output (the TV-SCART) and one as both an input and an output (VCR-SCART). The VCR-SCART is typicallly composite output only regardless of your output setting in the menu, which makes it perfect for a VCR. The beauty of a SCART system (all devices scart) is that you can daisy chain the devices, and then this can be an input too. I have my DVD player with scart output connected with a fully wired scart to scart cable to my Toppie VCR-SCART connector, my Toppies TV-SCART connector is hooked up to my Loewe TV with another fully wired SCART-SCART cable. I have all devices setup as RGB (my TV only has one RGB-SCART input) and then when the DVD player is taken out of standby, the Topfield automatically detects the pin8 signalling from the DVD player and passes the RGB through to the TV. So TV with only 1 RGB input is shared with Toppie and DVD player. If you hookup one of those adapters with SCART-RCA (etc!) to the VCR scart connector, obviously it won't be doing any fancy signalling, so the toppy (as most dual scart devices) has an option to ignore the signalling and can be setup to "external-AV". When you press the TV/VCR button on the Toppie remote, this will toggle between sending the Toppie output to the TV, or triggering the passthru to send to the TV when in this mode (so slightly less automatic than if you have a whole bunch of scart devices hooked up, but still quite useful!) DrWorm
Unfortunately, the terms I used to search on Google are a little too general and I got too many irrelevent results. But you answer is great and just what I was looking for, but can you clarify one thing for me? I want to make sure I understand what you've said correctly. My DVD does't have SCART, nor does my TV, but they both have RGB. If I buy two SCART/RGB adapter I can pass the RGB signal from my DVD to my PVR and then onto my TV - with no loss of quality? I'm actually buying a new TV today, and it only has 2 RGB inputs and I have 3 devices to plugin. If I can pass my DVD through the PVR I get around this limitation. It's a shame it can't be used to pass digital sound.

It's a shame it can't be used to pass digital sound. If by RGB inputs you mean 3 separate RCA sockets colour coded red/green/blue, then these are most likely component video and not RGB video. Whilst sharing the same colour coding, component video and RGB video (actually RGBs video where s is a separate sync lead) are incompatible. The Humax does not support component video, but does support RGBs. RGBs is generally supported by SCART sockets only and component video by 3 RCA leads colour coded red/green/blue. If you have to start using adapters, then there is a good chance for confusion in interconnecting incompatible video signals. I'm guessing that you need to connect a Humax, DVD player and VCR to the TV. If your TV and DVD player actually support component and not RGBs, then you will have to connect your Humax via s-video, DVD player via component or s-video and VCR via composite video. I expect your TV would have enough inputs to support the 3 devices in this way. My apologies if I have misunderstood what you mean by RGB and the connections actually available on the TV. Quelch
I have: A SD STB - Nextwave TDR 3190 and Digicrystal 9000 PVR 80 GB hard drive Both connected – scart to svideo through a Crest svideo switching device With provision for up to four devices To JVC flat screen CRT TV 26” And JVC DVD player connected – component to component This idea may be of help ! Not sure how you draw that conclusion, SCART can support composite, S-Video, RGB and component, depending on the machine itself. Pass-through is pass-through. tonymy01
I am talking OUTPUT, not input. Yes, input supports many things depending on the box (most boxes will pass through all the signals, not the original Strong 5290 though!). Didn't you read my whole message about passing through a DVD player with RGB? Regards
Timmy Downawell
I am talking OUTPUT, not input. Whoops, apologies, it was late... I even have my RGB DVD player set up via the Toppy the same as you.
