Divx Software

Recommended Posts

I bought a samsung dvd/HDD recorder yesterday that also plays divx. Basically as I suspected, it plays most divx files but not all.

One way to get them to the HDD of the samsung is to play them via s-video on the laptop, and hit record via av input on the HDD recorder, however it would probably be alot more HDD space efficient if i could instead edit them on the PC to make them compliant with the divx codecs that the dvd/hdd recorder does accept.

Has anyone come accross this issue and found any good software for doing this? and further, can you recommend what output settings seem to work the best with most hardware divx players?

Cheers.

man, u r opening a can of worms here.

first dl gspot - it is a small software which looks into your divx/xvid avi files and lists the codecs used, the options used, audio stream info etc.

atleast by comparing the files which play, and the ones which do not - you will have some idea which combination of codecs/settings/bit rate etc do not work.

as a rule of thumb, avi files with GMC and QPEL do not work on players, but work fine on pc.

You can use software like WinAVI converter to fix these files. it is not very expensive software & pretty easy to use.

there are many free & more powerful tools available - but they take a lot of time to master.

you may also look at www.videohelp.com or doom9.org

Just as an addition - and this is a VERY common problems, going by the comments I've heard from my fellow "criminal" downloading friends using divx/xvid DVD players - is that as far as I am aware none of the brand-name players will accept files with a vertical resolution greater that 720 pixels.

In other words, do not bother downloading the "HRHD" versions of things. Get the smaller version.

(NOTE TO SELF-APPOINTED FORUM POLICE: WHAT I JUST SAID WAS COMPLETELY LEGAL  )

And yes, Xvid files encoded using GMC or QPEL will not play in pretty much any hardware player. Fortunately, idiots who encode using these features are very rare.

Have heard that divx files using VBR audio might cause problems with some players: it seems CBR audio is fine, but there are a lot of encodes out there using VBR.

yeh - ithink that the prob that i have - wish there was something that i could do it bulk - i have a fully legal version of divx create but it's painfully slow and crashes if you put anymore than about 4 in the queue

(would love something that worked on linux)

Almost all of them, in fact.

VBR audio plays fine on Pioneer's players, despite their claim in the manuals that it won't work (then again, they also claim you can't play Divx or MP3 from DVD-R, and you most definitely can  )

I would suggest re-encoding them to XVID home profile using VirtualDub-MPEG2

Or try Gordian Knot or Auto Gordian Knot encode to XVID should work fine I use VBR and CBR MP3 audio. Play on a Samsung HD747 DVD player with no problems. Sometimes get the odd stutter though but reasonable PQ with movies compressed to 1.5Gb.

thanx for all the info guys.

my samsung had a fault with playing dvd's, so i took it back over the weekend and swapped it for a sony. probably a bad decision, cos where as the samsung actually allowed you to navigate divx files, the sony only lets you scroll thru them using the skip forward and skip back buttons. plus, it wont let you copy the divx files to its HDD either.

ontop of the divx issues, the sony picture quality on anything other than the progressive output is shockingly bad. i'm sure i've seen better pictures via a good VCR using composite, than the sony gave via 576i component, seriously it was woeful. the progressive is ok tho.

the other thing is, that it doesnt have any method for adjusting the zoom or the aspect ratio either. gotta say - if it actually worked playing dvd's, the samsung would have been alot better machine. i'm too embaressed to take the sony back now tho.

i got the dvd recorder to make it easy to back certain things up to DVD and it still does that ok, so what i'll most likely do is run a line-out of the laptop into the dvd recorder and just put things onto the HDD via the dvd recorders encoder.

i will give dr divx a try tho, because without the zoom and navigation menu features, its still good to be able to play divx straight off a dvd and have whole seasons fit on a single dvd, rather than say 4 eposodes.

Mich (or others), I've just got the Sony, and yes, am also disappointed with the very limited divx compatibility.

Since this post, have you had success with any conversion software?
