Dedicated Mame Computer --> Plasma

Recommended Posts

Has anyone built a dedicated Mame system that includes a Plasma and preferably wireless controllers ??

I have a spare P.C lying around and a spare Plasma that I want to set-up in the games/billiards room.

I was looking at building a Mame cabinet but thought the big Plasma would give a better effect (+ we can play Space Invaders whilst sitting on the leather lounges instead of standing up).

The wireless controllers will take a bit of setting up especially if I want them to have the joystick and 4 buttons that the Mame cabinets have (am thinking of using wirless xbox controllers as the base or maybe a wirelss keyboard).

Before I start experimenting just wondering if anyone else has done similar ???

I havent set anything like this up, but in my opinion the best controllers out there are xbox 360 controllers. You can hook the wireless ones up to your PC, but i dont think the wireless adaptor bit is available in australia, might have to import one.

I would suggest you have a look into a gen 1 modded Xbox - we use it for various MAME titles all the time. Added you can stream virtually all media running XBMC. Without doubt the best bang for buck appliance in the AV cabinet.

Specific to wireless controllers - I use two RF Logitec units (<$35 on ebay) - the Xbox remains out of sight at all times. The RF connectivity is a bonus.

Doesn't quite have the charm of an old arcade machine, but certainly a truck load more functional.

Cheers.

Thanks -I was thinking a gen 1 xbox would be cheap. I don't really want to use the wireless xbox controller though so I might rip the internals out of the controller and connect it up to an arcade style wireless control panel.

I find in many games (such as HyperOlympic) where the speed of clicking the buttons is critical that the old arcade buttons are far more effective than the Xbox buttons.

yep Mame for xbox is great - there are also countless other emulators for orig xbox in the event you have ROMs that mame may not support

more and more arcade games coming to xbox360 "arcade", but no where near the 1000's available as ROMs for mame or other emulators.

I find in many games (such as HyperOlympic) where the speed of clicking the buttons is critical that the old arcade buttons are far more effective than the Xbox buttons.

totally agree with this - button mappings for classic arcade games to the xbox controller are usually pretty cumbersome and annoying!!

did they ever release "oldschool" arcade controllers for xbox or x360?

cheers

EDIT: actually looks like a few around, like this one LINK

oooh and a wireless one also, some info HERE
