Hi

I want to be able to D/Load HD from my PC and run through my PJ using HDMI.

I tried out a couple of HD set top boxes with hard drives but they dont allow you to transfer TS file movies onto them

Another option is buying a HDMI video card and streaming it straight from the PC, I have heard this is hard to get running smoothly and there are resolution hassles.

Or I have been looking at the Pixel Magic HD media box http://www.pixelmagicsystems.com/products/...hd_mediabox.htm

and it seems to be the way to go, also looked at the Kiss media boxes and the Zensonic Z500 Media Player but these seem a bit buggy and not so user friendly

Any one been down this track or can offer any suggestions please?

It also up-scales DVD quality to HD, although I havent seen it, this technology seems a bit of a wank, that old saying "you can't make honey out of dog #hit"

I have my PC connected directly to Sony HS60 with 10m DVI->HDMI cable (from DSE).

Works beautifully.

wow really? I did try hooking up the PC using a DVI - VGA cable but it looked crap, blurry and couldn't fit to my screen properly, even with going through the PJ's optimiser set-up.

I've a resonably new PC with a 256MB 7600GT video card so worth giving it a shot then. So you have streamed HD to it and still no problems?

Don't know about DVI-VGA, but DVI-HDMI looks brilliant. All I did was, connected PC to PJ and video card (NVidia 6800) detected it as a "Digital Panel Sony HS60" and set the resolution to 1280x720.

that's it

Ok that’s given me an incentive to try it again, surely going from DVI to HDMI there is a loss in quality? as apposed to a card that had HDMI out?

DVI and HDMI are exactly the same as one another, image-quality-wise. The principal differences are that HDMI carries audio as well as video, and uses a different type of connector, but both use the same encoding scheme, and that's why a DVI source can be connected to an HDMI monitor, or vice versa, with a DVI/HDMI cable, with no intervening converter box.

Great, so all I need is a DVI to HDMI adapter, gotta be worth a try.

just been playing with my Nvidia control panel, what screen anables it to detect connections?

sorry for all the questions

Find and download the Coolbits Forceware app and run it and it will enable a heap more options on Nvidia cards. The Force TV is already in there, but it should automatically detect the PJ when you plug it in. Mine detects my PJ... most of the time

nope, I've got no idea what I'm doing :D , found a Coolbits download but it seemed to be just a reg change? Never saw any difference with the NVIDIA app.

My video card has 2 DVI connections, I assume I have the monitor in one and the PJ in the other? I even did the force display thingy and it found nothing, weird thing was this time nothing was changing on the PJ, only found component even when set to computer

is there a guide out there somewhere I can follow?

how did you hook up your sound vadimz?

bucknaked007,

I ONLY have my PJ connected to my media PC, so try that no monitor, just the projector. On the projector side HDMI connection only, with auto search for signal turned ON. With only the projector beeing connected it becomes the primary display and gets auto detected.

The sound is connected via Digital out (SPDIF) on my motherboard to my amp.

Very simple setup and it worked first time.

After you got your PJ working as a primary display you can start playing with secondry displays.

Good luck, don't give up :D DVI->HDMI is the best connection possible from your PC to your PJ.

I must be a complete knobend, I'm trying to hook it up via the DVI-VGA cable I have until my DVI-HDMI adapter arrives but I cant even get a picture now. I disconnected everything except the VGA on the PJ and I

plugged in the DVI end in my PC to the primary connection, and nothing, on the PJ I tried selecting auto, computer, still nothing.

disconnected it and plugged my monitor back in and nothing, only way I could get my PC monitor to work was to restart in safe mode and reboot PC back to the day before presumably before I installed Coolbits.

its wearing me down I tells ya

doesnt help that I loose my PC monitor while I'm plugging in the PJ

 OK, some more bits of info that could hopefuly help you...

* Before you connect the PJ change the display rate on you PC to 50Hz or 60Hz (while your Monitor is connected).

* Make sure your PJ is on before you turn on your PC. If it was not then reboot after turning the PJ on.

* VGA is an analog connection, so the PJ will not be telling your PC about the Max resolution, device name and so on. So you will not get Auto detection by Video card working. DVI / HDMI on the other hand is a digital connection, so when you connect your PJ HDMI into PC DVI it will auto set up resolution , refresh rate and so on.

* if you still connect through VGA then select the right source on the PJ manually.

Hi I'm back

got my DVI - HDMI adapter and hooked it up as my primary and have installed Powerstrip. Fired it up and it

found my Sony !!! but picture and text unreadable, as I was trying to use PC in another room from the PJ I ditched that idea and rebooted with primary as my PC and the PJ in the secondary, set them up as a clone and got the res perfect for the PJ, ran a HD demo and it looks #hit hot. messed about for a while trying to get my PJ looking right and my PC, adjusting one was changing the other but that seemed to be my only workable option. Finally got it so i could put my PC on 1400x900 and the PJ on 1280x720 and looks good BUT, on the PJ all I see is my desktop but no icons whatsoever, perfect size.

rebooted, turned PJ off, let it cool down then back on, still just the desktop.

Feel confident that this will actually work, just some teething trouble.

Cant see how it just locks onto my desktop and doesnt move from it, I can watch it rebooting and read all the guff on the screen then it just stays with an iconless desktop

should I set my PJ to 50 or 60 htz?

Good to hear you got it working...

* It sounds like you don't have it in "Clone" mode anymore, but in "Extend my desktop to secondary monitor (don't remember what that mode is really called)". This means that all your icons stay on your PC monitor and only the desktop is extended to the second monitor. To test this start dragging a window off you PC screen to one side and you will see it appear on your PJ.

* Always set your PJ to 50Hz

* Do you want to use your PC monitor and your PJ at the same time? If the answer is no then create two different profiles (in your NVidia control center) with perfect resolution for each device and switch between them as needed.

Thanks Vad, you're a wealth of information

so is having 2 profiles the only way I can get both resolutions right?

So I would start off a movie then swap profile's to play on the PJ?

I noticed a drop down of settings on the PC where I could select the quality, the highest was 1080i, why wasn't 1080p an option?

Now this is looking like it's a goer, my sound that connects from the PC via SPDIF, what does it connect in to my amp, digital coax? I don't have a SPDIF connection mentioned

Cheers Vad, picture looks great

* Switching profiles, have a look here http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=39689&hl=

* Connect SPDIF on your PC -> Digital Coax on your amp.

How do you use your PC in "Media PC mode"....

Do you use any HTPC apps like MediaPortal or Meedio? no, should I?

Do you control your media PC with remote control? no

Vad.

I guess it's not geared up to be a home theatre PC, I just played the HD movie through PowerDVD.

THANKS FOR LINK

You shouldn't need, or be using Powerstrip with the Nvidia cards. Also, if you don't need both screens, set your PJ to "single display" mode and set the res to 1280x720 @ 50Hz. That way, it should just boot the PC straight up and onto the PJ as it's main display.

If you still have coolbits (the registry hack) installed, you should have additional options in the Nvidia driver control page for setting resolutions for each screen.

SPdif actually refers to 2 types of connections. One is optical which most mobo's have and is a funny shaped squareish plug, and the other is Co-ax and just uses a normal RCA lead. Not all mobo's will have the co-ax output, but just use whatever your receiver has.

Is it possible, either using the native Nvidia controls, OR via Powerstrip, to get 1920x1080 @ 24 Hz out of the Nvidia based video cards?

Yes it is available through the Nvidia control panel. I tried it last night, and the TW600 even displayed it, although it was a bit messed up (only filled half the sreen, and had 2 images side by side). I'm using coolbits, so not 100% sure if it is a native function of Nvidia, or if it needs the hack.

Nvidia drivers actually have an advanced tab for resolutions in which you can enter any res you like and any refresh rate you like, and also has settngs for front porch and back porch (whatever they are).

yes I definately need both screens working, I can get the PC res fine but still having trouble with the PJ, havent given up yet.

How do I know If I have Coolbits installed? I can see it in the reg

I see there is a Coolbits2, do I want that?

watched a HD Demo on it and showed the wife, she said it didnt look realistic, too bright and colourfull.

aaaarrrrgggggg!!!!

I'll try and get a screenshot of the coolbits options posted later tonight, but basically it just adds stuff to the Nvidia options, so there'll be a lot more options available.

Once you have 1 screen working, and it is detecting the other one, it should just be a matter of selecting the 2nd display, choosing the resolution and refresh rate, and clicking apply. It will give you a 15sec counter to confirm the changes before it reverts back to the first display.
