How To Move Satellite Diy

Recommended Posts

Ah I do not have one.

Are they easy to get hold of ie Dick Smith?

Not sure about DSE, but Jaycar have a very cheap one.

A good satellite meter will cost around $2K

What are you trying to receive? C band or Ku band?

What size is your dish?

There is bugger all Ku band free to air channels available off AsiaSat 3 (105.5 East)

http://www.lyngsat.com/ is a good site for satellite info

L Band - do I need more than my 62cm dish for this?

It is for a job with Turner classics. (They will give me authorisation)

I need to get a SA PowerVu encoded reciever... but that is okay.

How do I move my dish from PAS 8 to AsiaSat (105.5 East) by myself?

If your current dish is only a offset 68cm or 90cm then you need to re-consider. as this sat will need atleast 2.4M mesh dish.

If you know anything about sail boats then you will know that a dish this size is going to need a hefty mast and guide wires to keep it from moving in the wind.

Once you have that sorted you need a satellite finder. ie like the one in jaycar. then you are going to need you lat and long (easily obtainable from a satnav system or www) then from there you can calculate the general azmith and rotation from true north.

From all that unless you have done it before I would not bother or get someone in the know to install and supply the correct dish for you.

Just my 2c worth.

As Strada says for Turner you'll need probably a 2.4 mtr dish depending on where you are...

If you've never installed one of these, I'd suggest that you pay to have it installed as they're quite large, and dangerous if incorrectly installed... ie in strong wind they can become flying saucers... or rip off parts of roofs and walls ...

This is on Ku band, basically small 'pay tv' like dish size.

If you go this path, i'd be inclined to to pay a little more and opt for a 3.0metre and yard mount it. (Means 5-6 bags of cement). Steel mast - cheaper at 'Metaland' I find. Ensure the clearest West-East view you can, poison all trees:-)

You can 'motorise' the dish to view more than one satellite, this means; dish, coax, 4 strand wire, positioner, and 'actuator' which fits onto the dish, LNB (some of which do both Ku and C band).

See also the channels on 'Chinasat6B', (From NSW I span i701 to Measat 3, see the 'Asia' tab at Lyngsat for a list of sats you might receive). (See also Optus D2 for Ku band-small dish- Globecast services, now carrying NHK World (Japan) fta).

C band dishes, cable, actuators etc - speak to Hualin in Sydney for good prices, advice etc:-

Decoders, various exist including PVR's. Atm a couple of DVB-S2 (HD) channels; LuxeTV and Voom (plus 3-4 on Chinasat), otherwise a decoder or PVR to DVB-S (SD) spec will be fine, say an old Topfield 4000 or 5000PVR etc.

Topfield:-

Australian/NZ free to air satellite forum; product reviews, install advice etc, no 'pay tv talk though'.

Can't offer any suggestions for WA based installers, call Sciteq over there they should be able to recommend a reputable installer.

As for options, if you can put in a large dish, then you're probably better off, provided unwired internet stays away. we have no end on problems with them here in parts of Melbourne.. the large dish with a motor would give you heaps of FTa chinese channels from the 3s and 6B sats..
