I saw this very-impressive HDSTB in Harvey Norman today. Unfortunately it was not connected to anything, but from hearing what I have about it, I think I want this one for sure!

I suppose I could have bought it too, yet my CRT Samsung is not back yet (the replacement one, not the stupid one I bought from Myers back in Dec 06), so I thought why bother. Now that I think about it, it was the only one I saw there at the store. I could have used my new credit card on it too.

So my questions are:

1) Should I just have bought it, seeing as its the only one there (far as I know)?

2) Does the HDMI carry both video and audio?

3) Is there anything bad about this particular HD STB?

1. don't think there is a shortage of these units but if the price was good yes go ahead.

2. Yes it does however if you can check the firmware of this units through the menu function the updated version is 2.2. Philips arranges everything for you ie they organise pick up and delivery from your home at their expense so service is great.

3. I own this unit and am very impressed by the excellent PQ and the functional options that it has available. My component Panny which is over two years old is jam packed with functionality. So I use this as my reference point.

4. Set the unit to 1080 and everything will be rosy. however you can change the resolution yourself but this function is done on the unit and not the remote control.

5. Other users are very happy with this unit especially if it is connected to a plasma display.(my experience and many others). Goodluck with what ever you are buying.

Right then - it's mine! Next question: what is a good HDMI cable to use with it? Cable size is almost irrelevant to me, but brand is what I'm after. Nothing too expensive but nothing too crappy. Something like Belkin, perhaps?? Or will any HDMI cable do?

Hi nova

I'm using Jaycar's HDMI cables forget the name they sell them under 3m lenghth cost me just under $50 and works a treat. If you look on the threads other members sing the praises of Jaycar cables.

Dr Teal,

I have the original firmware connection the $64 question is what does the upgrade fix up?.

I must be the only one in the world that has this box set to a CRT ( Sony KVHR36M31) I must say the old Toshiba gave a licking to this STB PQ wise.

Hi robertr

I stand corrected

The firmware adds a volume control using side arrow keys and patches up a "no or low sound issue" if connected with HDMI on HD 7 when TV station using macrovision and your set is HDCP compliant.

I must say that the PQ when connected via HDMI is where this unit comes in to its own.. simply up their with the best.

I also have a panny 104a and had my Panny 50pv60a connected to it via component. PQ was of a high standard but HDMI is IMO and to my liking the superior PQ.

I have heard somewhere on this forum that this box does not give very good PQ on SD channels via component. I have mine running via HDMI so I wouldn't know

Correct it actually displays flicker on my Sony KVHR36M31 CRT whilst with 90 12 & 20 it does not ,in fact these stations are excellent PQ.

Bloody 7 & SBS have flicker.

  • 4 weeks later...

After a long time, it's only another week and 1/2 or so till I get my TV back. Which means I can finally buy this from Harvey Norman (they still have some there).

Is it possible I could get HN to check the firmware version before I buy it, and make sure it is v2.2?

If you're interested, BigW has these for $198, I nearly bought one, but want one with VGA out.

That's a great price for the Philips 7200. They didn't have one at my local Big W. Whereabouts did you see it thanks yabbal.

Hi alfman

Yes that price is correct . They are selling them for that at Big W in Adelaide SA.

At that price they would have to be the best packaged HDMI Hi Def STB on the market.

Hi Nova

I have been told that any stb with the s/n greater than kr030630 XXXXXX will have the latest firmware upgrade.

I bought mine from HN on 26/02/07 and it already has v 2.2 on it.

Any of you guys know if HN has that 30 days policy, that if you find something cheaper they'll refund the difference?

Got mine for $300.00 from HN.

Cheers,

Don.

So any DTR7200 STBs bought around...now, or a month from now, will have the 2.2 upgrade already installed?

As long as serial number is KR130630 and higher....it will have 2.2 version firmware according to Philips.
