Forrester predicts Blu-ray will win Format War

One of the most respected technology-research companies and ICT analysts, Forrester, have predicted that Blu-ray will win over its rival HD DVD format, but claimed it won't be a quick victory. "It is now clear to Forrester that the Sony-led Blu-ray format will win," Ted Schadler, a Forrester analyst, said in the report. "But unless the HD DVD group abandons the field [a move Forrester recommended], it will be another two years before consumers are confident enough of the winner to think about buying a new-format DVD player." Also slowing things down: The image quality of today's DVD is "good enough" that most people won't be "itching to switch until high-definition TV is much more widespread". Forrester claims Blu-ray has several advantages that will help it win the day: "HD DVD is a one-trick pony for video playback, but Blu-ray is also designed for games and computers. Indeed, its inclusion in millions of Sony's next-generation video game consoles is a factor. And when former HD DVD loyalist Paramount endorsed Blu-ray, it shifted the movie studio momentum. Finally, although Blu-ray manufacturing will cost a little more initially, it offers more capacity and employs a proven technology, Java, for interactive features."

Its a "prediction" - nothing more, nothing less. But I do remember the predictions made about Betamax, MiniDisc et al.

Anybody feel like Blu-ray is being forced upon them, instead of being able to choose which format we want. When i go into JB they have a little stand of Blu-ray movies but no HD-DVDs. I thought HD-DVDs were out before Blu-rays at least in the United States.

How out of date are these people at Forrester, ' HD DVD a one trick pony' indeed.

Haven't they heard of the X-Box HD DVD addon,, aren't HP (Blu-ray supporter) putting HD DVD players in computers... see link below.

Hasn't HD DVD equaled Blu-ray capacity for disc storage at 51 Gigs. ?

"One of the most respected technology-research companies"...............with that effort I hardly think so.

Sounds like comment for cash to me.

One layer on the Bluray Disc can hold up to 25Gb, HD-DVD on the other hand can hold up to 15Gb.

A dual-layer BD can hold up to 50Gb, whereas a dual-layer HD-DVD can hold up to 30Gb and so on, you can do the math.

Bluray Discs have an advantage over HD-DVD in terms of layer structure. Hence engineers can fit more layers on a Bluray Disc easier than on an HD-DVD. However, each layer on the BD is super thin, so a single scratch on the disc could completely damage the disc. But the team at TDK has managed to create this

Here's a link regarding sales of BDs and HD-DVDs:

Well, its not much more, but layers on HD DVD are up to 17gig each now. Triple layer commercial HD DVD's are on the approval list for 51 gig movie discs. You don't need more than that.

As you say, the thin levels on BD discs would make them highly unstable for PC users, despite the coating. A caddy should have been used for this. For mass storage BD does have the advantage, but short of full HDD backup, is it really necessary? Personally I think that amount of data storage is only going to be useful if it is re-writeable and I'm not sure the disc structure of BD would be too reliable for multiple re-writes.

I think for this amount of storage HDD's still have the advantage as you can have multiple drives hooked up with faster read/write access.

Just my opinion

lol and with a post like that i think its GAME OVER for you .

I can feel a ban coming on , ( sing it with me fella's lol )

That's probably what he wanted. Now he can add "those HD MF's are so desperate they had to get me banned" to his rant.

It will be a shame to see that post disappear from such classics as

Also reported DannyBoy2511, it's just getting old now, was funny for maybe the first half dozen posts...

Yeah, there is that sort of feeling in general with blu-ray, it's almost like Sony etc have given up on normal marketing, and switched to like a mock post war winning strategy, buying up press and reviews declaring victory.

Some of those links at the bottom of the page are interesting, duel format players being dumped?

So much anger from one so young, perhaps a tune to soothe the savage beast:

Oh Danny boy, the wings, the wings are flapping

From glen to glen, and down the mountain side

The dragon's come, and all the trolls are burning

'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must smile.

Don't come ye back when summer's in the meadow

Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow

'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow

Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, you're such a tool.

First up, Im a MS loyalist and I like HD-DVD, but lately BR has got me thinking. I see its winning the Amazon sales ranks now on dvdwars. And in retail shows, the spin the retailers are putting on is that BluRay is better. I know far more than the average joy who walks into a retail shop and when I questioned as to why, I wasnt given a straight credible answer but nonetheless sometimes perceptions are what matters.

I dont know what happened to see the Hd-DVD sales loose out currently? Maybe to do with the poor quality original bluray titles? Now they have the mastering being done better and they arent worse than HD-DVD people bought into it?

I'm glad that flamer got reported - totally uncalled for. I dont always agree with what you have to say Andrew, but that doesnt change my respect for the majority of what post.

I think too the Studios are clinging to BD+, now that what the IEEE labelled as the most likely security platform to fail has, with AACS. AACS have tried to spin it by saying its not cracked, but the security is only as weak as the weakest link and unless they mandate TPM in PCs or disallow PC playback these sorts of exploits will always be available.

For computing I like the extra disc space with bluray but I dont like the sound of BD+ - I consider it my right to stream content I own around my house and convert it into other formats as I see fit for personal use.

Maybe this article will give you some hints.....

Sales of movies on Blu-ray discs have surpassed sales of motion pictures on HD DVDs in the USA, a market study by a market tracking agency claims. But that is not a surprise: Sony has bundled some PlayStation 3 game machines with a BD movie and included a voucher for another Blu-ray disc, essentially shipping several hundreds of thousands Blu-ray movies for free.
