Help Seting Up A Pvr Using Vista Media Centre

Recommended Posts

Like many of you - I am now very tired of waiting for the Toppy and Beyond Wiz.

I have now decided to setup a PVR using Windows Vista.

Can I please get some advice as to what additional software you may be using and I also notice someone mention that they use an xbox 360. What roles does this play.

This is my setup

*Full hard wired home network : In the study I have the PC, Lounge has the Plasma and HD Set Top Box

*Wireless is a stable one as well.

Questions:

*Do you have a seperate TV/TUNER Card on the PC or do you access the Set Top Box in some way using the component out back to the PC.

Thanks in advance

The tuners (i have 2 tinyusb2 tuners) stay in the PC in the study, and that study pc becomes the entertainment hub. you can then access that media directly (ie. by watching on that actual PC) or by streaming the media to an xbox360, and using the xbox360 video card and outputs, xbox360 remote, etc.. to view the media whether it be live tv, or recorded tv.

Think of the xbo360 sort of as a thin client and the study pc is the server. ie. if you change channels on the xbox360 remote, its actually changing the channel of the tuner hooked into the study PC. it all works extremely well... except i wish the xbox360 fans were a whole lot quieter.

Sash, this is called a HTPC (Home Theatre PC).

There is an entire branch devoted to the subject under Digital Tuner Cards.

Also type in "htpc setup" in google and you'll get 100's of dedicated forums and guides.

www.htpcnews.com pops out early

Enjoy

there is a section dedicated to tuner cards etc.. except i think the average reader here figures thats only for people who want to watch stuff on their PC and use a mouse to change channels. my point in s similar post was to state that IMO vista competes with the best PVRs out there, and has by far the nicest GUI of any PVR i've come across.

if you are looking for other forums (of which there are many) the main one in australia is xpmediacentre.com.au and in the states the main one is thegreenbutton.com
