Dave_L
Hi All, Currently looking around at speakers and the ATS-4's look like they'd be nice. As they are quoted as being able to produce sounds down to 30hz, is a subby really required with floorstanding speakers such as these ? Would adding a subby, say like the S-120 make that much difference ? The AVR I'm looking at coupling them with is the Denon 2307 (if that makes any difference). Any guidance or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Mining Man
There will be others that go into greater detail, so I'll keep it brief... Yes, a sub is still recommended, particularly for HT. Even systems running full range electrostats like Tassie Devil's have subs. And then there's Norpus, Spearmint and Thudd... Yes the Sub 120 would make a difference. But, just an observation: I have the same sub, and given my time again, I think I'd prefer something with a single 10 or 12 inch driver than the dual 8 inch drivers in the 120. The Denon (and likewise most AVRs) will be more than capable for the bass management you require. And chances are, the best sounding arrangement will be to set the crossover at about 80Hz (perhaps with L+R+Sub, or just Sub only). So you'll definitely need a sub one way or another. I love the setup, and for the price range I was looking at I believe i made the right choice. If i could change anything, i would have gone for the next model centre (CC-240). I find that the bass is great from the s-120, but i am only a newbie so dont have anything to compare it too, but it suits my needs and room size (4x5m) perfectly. I believe you DO need the sub, I had such an improvement in my sound when I setup the crossover frequency and set all my speakers to small. Just a quick question, have you ran the Auto Setup for the Denon, i found mine was WAAAAYYY out on its speaker distances. I ended up setting it all up manually
quijibo
The easy and cheap answer to 'Do you NEED a sub?' is no. I ran with main speakers that comfortably get down to 30hz and are still good at about 25hz for a year and really enjoyed movies with deep bass. I bought a sub that is good to around 20hz, and a bit below and although it does add to the experience, it isnt a necessity, and I usually have it turned off or if it is on it is turned down quite low and is there purely for the rumble effect. It can shake the windows when turned up so it doesnt get used too often when the wife is watching movies with me... or in the house for that matter. By going the aaron route I assume you are interested in saving money, so I wouldnt rush into it. Try it first without the sub and see how you go. I believe you are getting more bang for your buck because you are buying Australian made?
Dave_L
Thanks for the replies guys....very much appreciated. I haven't as yet purchased any equipment, as our house is still being built & should be finished in a couple of months....so I am purely researching and trying to figure out what it is I want to look at, come shopping time. I am going to purchase a Panasonic 50" PX600a and to couple with that, I was looking at getting: - Panasonic XR700 AVR - SB TP100 speakers However doing some reading on how much the speakers affect the overall sound, I'm beginning to lean towards the Denon 2307 and floorstanding speakers etc (as mentioned above). I know the Denon/Aaron road will be a bit more expensive, but I imagine the sound quality would be substantially better ?? I'd love to go wild and spend big on "great" speakers etc. but I'm looking at around the $6K budget mark, including the plasma (which I'm hoping will be between $3-3.5K come mid-2007), leaving about $2.5 - 3K on the sound system. Leaving the subby out of the equation at the start might be an option if the budget is getting stretched too tightly....and can always be a Xmas present
AndrewT
leaving about $2.5 - 3K on the sound system.Leaving I managed to get the Denon AVR-2307, the ATS-4, CC-120, SUB-120 and SS-120 package for $3150
wheelz
I use aaron myself and i would also suggest as Andrew T did that you go up to the bigger center (cc-240),its pretty big but sounds great and was a great upgrade from my smaller aaron center i had before it.If you can hold off on the sub maybe you could get the ATS-5s which have alot of bass and then save abit more and get a sub later. cc240=700 ats5=1300 ss120=500 total=2500 rrp with a bit of haggling you should hopefully get that close to $2000,leaves you a $1000 for amp(no idea how much the denon is)and save for a sub later.
