Hd On Regional (win, Sc10)

Recommended Posts

Just wondering....How much HD do regional networks currently show? Do they show 9am, ACA etc in HD? What about stuff like CSI, House? Sunday night movies?

Thanks

And my questions are...

1) Do representatives from the Digital TV Broadcasters respond to messages on this forum ? IF NOT, WHY NOT ?

2) In Regional areas, why are there SO FEW programs transmitted in true 1080i High Definition format ? Are country people receiving just a basic limited Digital TV service compared to capital cities ? What is the problem ?

3) From Mt Taylor Bairnsdale, why are PRIME Ch 7 a long way LAST to commence Digital TV broadcasts ? Still nothing with AFL season soon to commence ! Info here says start date Feb 2007. But will that date be delayed month after month, like Channel 10 did ?

4) Why don't SBS transmit EPG Now and Next program information like the other channels ?

All replies appreciated.

Not really, I guess they have better things to do. Though very occasionally, sometimes they do.

Due to the different advertisments and local segments in each regional market, for them to run a localised HD service, it would require a large number of HD encoders (one for each market) which would cost, a lot. As such, since they can't really run localised content (i.e. ads), channels such as WIN, don't show all the HD programming from Nine, since if you're watching the HD channels, you don't get ads.

I think they did, it disappeared when the video program guide disappeared. Not too sure on that though.

This is very frustrating as several of the movies come out with DD 5.1 which we miss out on (not to mention the better PQ) You cant be serious saying the HD encoders cost alot? My $1500 PC seems to do it OK. I will even record all the ads for them in SD and recode them in HD for them if they are that broke, if it meant getiing HD movies.

I think they know that they'll get hazed by narly everyone on these forums.

It's the same for a lot of places. CRIME PRIME was supposed to start with NBN and SC10 here in December but got delayed untill February and now im waiting for the end of February to roll around to see how much further CRIME PRIME gets pushed back. What's worse is that CRIME's PRIME's DTX for Middle Brother is just sitting on the ground at Middle Brother atm and doing sfa... CRIME PRIME is the worst offender in Bendigo where WIN and SC10 ave been digital for nearly 2 years and still no action from CRIME PRIME. They have only very recently ordered their DTX for Bendigo.

Broadcast quality/spec HD encoders are very advanced pieces of equipment that cost an arm and a leg (and then some). There is a lot more to it than what you describe, especially when you consider that it's a realtime encoded stream.

Well, they've had about 10 years notice to save up for that equipment. How much do they need? 20 years?

I think it's just another example of how broadcasters have it so easy that they can sit back and protect their profits rather than having to innovate to generate profit.

I think its unreasonable to expect premium service for such a low population density.

If they don't see the value yet in a full-hd all-the-time service in capital cities, you guys in regional areas are pushing the proverbial uphill.

Whatever happens, capital cities will be catered to first. Its not so much fun for you guys, but it is a reasonable thing to occur.

7 QLD has separate 'HD'* for each broadcast region.

*yes, I know, lets not get into the this is HD, this is not HD debate again

Completely serious. Unless things have changed, one (or more) of the Tassie transmitters is in difficult terrain and in order to get good coverage it has a lower bitrate than other WIN sites (19Mbit?). Since WIN only has (had) one HD encoder (if WIN still carries non-9 network in some areas, then I imagine they have more than 1 to handle each separate network sourced area), either Tassie has no HD or everyone else with WIN gets lower bitrate HD.

Employees do, there are a few lurking around. You won't hear them say I work for such and such. Its actually rather amusing when they do post because someone always tries to argue with them as to what caused a problem. Usually its something small like equipment failure but out come the conspiracy stories everytime.

If terrain plays such a big part in HD bit rates how does the ABC get away with runnning a full 23Mbps MUX here in Tassie? Could it be the real reason is they dont want to spend the extra bucks and buy more bandwith to get higher bit rates into regional areas.

Capital cities with the exception of Canberra - the so-called 'nations capital'.

Being in the ACT, we only get the regional versions of 10 / 9 and 7 and therefore get less content. Still no HD sport ie AFL (even when it is broadcast at the same time around the country).

While the ACT and other regional areas gets most HD primetime shows, we continue to miss out on HD sport. I think that the regional commercial stations have had ample time to get HD right since HD TV has now been out for 3+ years. Cost is one thing but they could be futher encouraging uptake of HD if they actually supported it better. There shouldn't be too many reasons why a modern network can't upconvert ads to HD if ad revenue is the blocker....

Does anyone know if WIN/PRIME or SC10 are looking to build more HD transmitters so we can finally get more HD content? HD AFL on SC10 would be a great start.

Its not an issue of upscaling ads, its an issue of appropriate advertising for each broadcast area. Apparently SC10 and WIN don't have a separate HD encoder for each broadcast area, instead one services everywhere (ie, one for Ten, one for 7, one for 9 etc). Any ads that were run would have to be generic non-location specific ones.

Is it likely that the regional networks will roll out separate HD encoders for each of their broadcast areas? Is this something that SC10 will be looking to do this year?

HD encoders are expensive, but a HD encoder for BCV, CTC, NRN and TNQ license areas of SC10, and HD encoders for SC Tassie and Darwin would be a good start.

So in terms for getting a HD encoder for the ACT (and/or other regional areas), is this something that SC10 will be likely to do this year or will it be several years off? I think both WIN and Prime are in the same boat relying on just 1 HD encoder for several broadcast areas....

I would have thought that Network 10 would have been putting pressure on SC to pick up their act. It must be a bit embarrassing when each Saturday night AFL game on SC10 the presenters introduces the game as a HD broadcast, and then at the end of the game they proudly award the 'Sony Full HD player of the game award' all while SC 10 gives a second rate SD presentation...
