Okano 32" Lcd - $885 + 5yr Wrty At Jbhifi / How To Set Color Temp?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just purchased an OKANO 32" no brand LCD from JB for only $885 (bargained down from $1096) with 5year warranty thrown in. Pretty good unit IMO for the price.

I had been eyeing these for a while in JB but didnt want to get it as it the picutre/contrast looked abit dark.

After tweaking it in store, I got a good image which was as good as the rest of the TVs in store.

When I got it home I found I cant get it looking right in darks scenes when watching foxtel through RCA cables. Day light is too bright, dark scenes are too dark and skin tones go too redish.

Is this anything to do with the color temp? Anyone got any suggestions how to tweak it? ATM presets are Warm, Cool and natural. What do most people use?

Anyone else had experience with this TV and know what the best settings are?

Anyhow, connecting it up via VGA and its flawless. Loaded up some 720p content and it looks fantastic.

Still waiting component cbales to arrive for my ps2.

overall great TV, but pity about the way foxtel looks.

Cant complain about the price.

Foxtel through RCA (I assume you mean the yellow video cable with audio cable for left (white) and right (red) channels, since you are waiting on component cables (also RCA....at the TV end, at least) for the PS2) is not going to be as good as is possible. Try getting a set of component leads for your Foxtel viewing as well. When the component cables you have already ordered arrive, try them with Foxtel - you will need a different SCART connector though, not the one which came with your Foxtel STU.

BTW, nice price, especially if it's HD. Is it?

As for tweaking, just play around until you get something you like. You won't break anything

Yep its HD, 1366x768 like all other 32" panels.

I got my PS2 component cables and on default settings its VERY dark. Takes alot of tweaking to get right and even at that its sometimes very difficult to distinguish between dark colors. Eg Star Wars Episode 3 has a lof of dark scenes which blend togther while on my CRT is still very visible.

I find this is not the case when using VGA though. Only seems to be when using RCA or component.

But I dont want to have to play all my DVDs through the computer.

When I tried tweaking the Color Temp , helps a little but make the picutre too bring and un-natural

I also purchased one of these screens, but the purpose was to use it to for our instore PS3 demo unit. While i had it at home i watched a bit of TV and it looked just as you have stated, pretty crap. This was through a HD set-top box too and compnent cables, so its probably not just your source. I didnt really play around with it much but i would definatly say that the contrast of the screen is poor, and that skin tones look really bad.

Having said that PS3 and Xbox 360 seems to look really sweet on it, customers all comment on how great it looks, and ask where i got it from.

I think that for $1000 this screen is good value, you get what you pay for and we didnt pay much. You seem to have got a good price too, i paid $1000 including the 5 year warranty back at the end of November. I figured if its used all day everyday for 5 years surely it will die and i can get a new one

If anyone has one of these screens and thinks they have it set up nicely i would be very keen to hear from them too.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear experiences from another owner.

How did you hook up you ps3 and 360?

You see i dont know if its the panel either. When i have it hooked up via VGA port it looks great no matter what you throw at it.

RCA and Component is a different story though...

Any other owners out there manage to tweak this unit?

:D

I have used only compnent input for Xbox 360 and tried both HDMI and Component for PS3.

Just on that, i tried runing PS3 on HDMI but stuck with component. When i set the PS3 to 720P over HDMI it doesnt like it and the picture on the screen keeps going off and on. I think it is trying to sync but not liking it very much. 1080i over HDMI works fine but looks shithouse! Everything is really blocky and pixelated. So far PS3 games are only 720P native anyway, so i guess PS3 scales from 720P to 1080i, then screen scales back to 1366x768, probably not a good combination. I fed the screen 1080P over HDMI through PS3 and i shows a picture and syncs ok, but there are a few glitches in the picture, so it seems like it can almost handle the 1080P input which would have been nice.

I am not sure why i cant get 720P over HDMI to work, it could be the screen, cheap HDMI cable, or the PS3 itself. The guy at JB thinks it might be the PS3, as it is the Jap version he said the 720P would be 60Hz, and that the screen can probably only handle 720P 50Hz, but I havent investigated this any further just yet. The manual doesnt help at all, I couldnt find anywhere what signals it can handle on any input.
