Masking Pj Screen

Recommended Posts

Howdy all,

Getting to the business end of our Home Theatre assembly now (promise of pictures when finished  )

One thing I need to deal with is remasking my 4 x 3 screen to 16 x 9.

Essentially I want a temporary solution that will carry me over until I can afford a new screen for a (very desirable) CIH set up.

What I want to do is simply run one line of non reflective black tape at the appropriate point in my screen height to assume the requisite 16 x 9 picture border. After that I will use the screen drop switch to stop the screen at the correct point. (yes I have inquired as to professionally remasking and having the limit switch reset but the cost is a little exxy and they won't guarantee that the screen is dead flat after the surgery)

Does anyone know of such black tape, and if so where can one purchase some?

Cheers,

Curious

I've actually thought about doing the same thing Curious, but to convert my 16:9 motorised screen into a 21:9 screen.

I think the tape will work, but probably won't be as good as a proper flocking fabric.... but it's a lot better than nothing.

I also thought about using velcro and having a removable flock fabric so I can get the best of both worlds, but I think the thickness of the velcro would damage the screen when it's rolled up.

A product that the Americans rave about in the AVS "Dedicated Theatre Design and Construction" section is some material called Black Fidelio Velvet at US$4 per yard.

I havent seen any references to that product available in Australia.

In the US, its available from http://www.bymichelle.com/fidelio.html

Here is a picture of this velvet next to some other common black cloths

I have another idea Curious; contact Richard from Oz Theatre Screens and see if he'll sell you some of his velour flocking. I've heard that it's one of the best available, and the best part is that it's self adhesive!

Thanks guys, I see where you are going with this but my set up doesn't allow for any velvet/velour borders. I actually need a line of tape that adheres to the screen but won't interfere with the rolling action when it retracts.

Foggy do you know if the velour used by Richard actually adheres to his retractable screens? (have to give him a call I think)

Gaffa tape is something I might try, there is also black duct tape available that is very thin and ideal for what I want but unfortunately is reflective to a certain degree.

Any tape that is black and non reflective will do the job I reckon, I'm happy to guinea pig my screen for the experiment, but want to do it once with the right kind of tape.

The default will be the duct tape I think, any other ideas from the forum clan?

Cheers,

Curious

I'm not sure Curious, I guess it also depends on your screen material.

One thing to be cautious about though, is if the adhesive "runs" on a hot day and affects the white part of the screen.

Good point hadn't thought of that, the duct tape is looking better and better!

The last thing I want to do is post any negativity here.

But it does seem like it maybe more trouble than its worth, that is unless there is a simple solution.Good luck!

A sobering thought I guess, but I am determined to find a suitable tape to do the job!

Any other suggestions will be met with careful deliberation and maximum enthusiasm :D

Determination to find tape all shot to hell now :P Richard from Oz Theatre Screens (thanks for the referral Foggy) set me straight regarding use of tape and why it won't work over the long term.

At this stage I have two options:

1. Mask and screen print the black bar I want (not gonna happen...way to much scope for f*ck-ups there  )

2. Trim the excess from the bottom of the screen and refit the weight bar - oh yeah, and reset the limit switch so the motor doesn't suck the newly trimmed screen straight off the weight bar and spin it several times inside the screen housing :P

Oh yeah and a third option...BUY A NEW SCREEN CHEAPSKATE!

Currently investigating the second and third options :D

Cheers,

Curious
