collingwood
I'm after a surround sound speakers 5.1 or 6.1 in bookshelf style for up to $1000 I've just been to JB hifi and had a listen to Jensen QX 200 and they sounded ok. I've seen Paradigm Cinema CT70 speakers on Peninsula Home Theatre web site for $999 but don't know anything about them. Can anyone recommend speakers up to $1000. Just my 5 cents worth. My experience is that you shouldn't go ballistic with surrounds. The most important speakers in a surround system are and in this order. You centre and your of course left and right speakers. On averaged these do 85-90% of the work.
quijibo
I think he is after a full 5.1 setup not just the surrounds. I assume that because I hope nobody is stupid enought to spend $1000 on a pair of jensen speakers for just the rears in a home theatre setup. At the moment I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-SR674 and I'm going to have shelves made for the front under the projector screen it will hold dvd's and I figure the 2 fronts and centre can sit there, possibly having rear mounted on side walls, not sure where sub will go yet. Would rather have all matching speakers as when not in use as a home theatre it will be a living room. Is $1000 for a pair, or three pair.Cheers Up to $1000 for all the speakers....2 front, centre, 2 rears and a sub.

Alebonau should be in soon..hes got bi-poles (with pictures in his sig). Nice set up..wall mounted and perfect for surround. Another suggestion if you are looking for wall mounted and not very obtrusive is B & W FPM (flat panel monitors ) ...ok not the best sound but as rears they hold the top ends ok... but for more mid levels youll need a proper wooden boxed speaker if thats what you want. Richter make a good bipole and so do Mission. (m5ds) Choosing speakers Yes looking for the whole speaker set up. Hard to reccomend anything in this price range, and FORGET the sub!.start with a pair of good fronts and work up to the rest of them. If you can, build a kit sub and save a fortune. they are easy to build Cheers

It is better to wait and get something decent. I have Vaf DCX Gen 7's fronts custom made DCX gen 7 centre. Accusound SW250 sub with the TH300 amp module.(The module in the 250 used to hum. the TH300 module is whisper quiet) Delta 895 surrounds and delta 825's x2 for rears in my 8m x 10m family room. Sound is superb and tonal matching is amazing.

I also auditioned Krix which are made in Adelaide as well. Vaf say they don't discount but I managed to arrange a group discount for employees of CSIRO and got 20% of the assembled prices of everything. I have formed an amicable relationship with Phil Vafiadis and Simon Wilde (ex Duntech) who designed the DCX Gen 7 and they and all the staff are great people to deal with. I also can sing the Praises of Alan Henning the CEO of Accusound Australia. Ian is a very friendly and helpful gentleman in arranging a new power module for my SW250 which had a 50HZ hum. He as discussed above tested out the power module in the new TH300 sub for 50 hz hum and arranged everything.

Hi Collingwood, I bought 2 pairs of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's and a 9CS centre for a total of $1050 from JB Hifi ($350/pr and $350 for the centre). They (9.1s) sound bloody good for the money - I used to have VAF DCXs and a DC4 centre. I looked at VAF but couldn't find anything in my budget. Although the Wharfedale's produce reasonable bass for their size I'm running a Shiva passive sub (Beima 200W RMS per channel amp) and using the 80Hz crossover setting. Very happy for the price... aflman
Boston Acoustics make the Bravo (an excellent multi-purpose speaker). I use these for my surround backs and a pair of B&W THX dipoles for surrounds. The Bravos are really impressive in performance both for HT & music and because of their unique shape offer a mounting options. They retail from memory at $899 a pair but can pick them up for around $700. Have a listen at a Boston dealer if you can.

I am not really a bass head and I sometimes set all 5 speakers to large except the rears (my custom DCx G4 centre is 1 metre wide 25cm high and 43 cm deep. It uses exactly the same drivers and number as the DCX G$ except that the config is set to suit a centre speaker. This gives you all the bass you need for music so I set the receiver to no sub in music mode. Nothing can replace the effects of a good sub for movies however. I have everything calibrated and balanced usind MCCAC 9 band equaliser of my Pio ax4 receiver and action movies usually result in my wife and daughters getting into the car and leaving the house to do some shopping . dantan
It is extremely difficult to purchase a full surround speaker system (speakers plus sub woofer) for $1,000.00 or less. Try Steinman Audio, as this company makes affordable (but quite decent, apparently) systems. I remember reading about one such system in an Aussie magazine, for a 5 speaker system (no sub woofer) at $499.00 recommended retail price.
